Alkhornet, located at the entrance to Isfjorden, marks the transition in geology from flat plateau terrain to an alpine mountain landscape shaped by steep edges.
Day 2-7: Prins Karls Forland | Smeerenburg | Ice Edge
Visit Poolepynten, a headland on Prins Karls Forland, known for its walrus colony and historic burial site. Cruise through Magdalenefjord, surrounded by sharp, pointed mountains and dramatic scenery. Sail to Smeerenburg, a former whaling station steeped in legend, now frequented by walruses. Make a possible landing at Virgohamna, a historic site tied to early North Pole air expeditions, with visible remains of 17th-century blubber ovens. Land on Ytre Norskøya for a hike to a bird cliff hosting little auks, along with nesting arctic terns, common eiders, and geese. Follow the continental shelf, an area where fin and blue whales are often seen feeding in nutrient-rich upwelling zones. Search the shifting ice edge, a dramatic landscape alive with seals, seabirds, and polar bears.
View Alkefjellet, a towering bird cliff that serves as a nesting site for thousands of Brünnich guillemots. Join a Zodiac cruise through Storisstraumen and a ship cruise past Bråsvellbreen, part of the vast Austfonna ice cap—Europe’s third-largest by volume and area. Discover Kvitøya, home to a walrus colony and the historic site of Andreeneset with its Arctic exploration remains.
Hike on an area of Sjuoyane, or “Seven Islands”, the northernmost part of Svalbard, home bird cliffs, overflowing in the summer with black guillemots, ivory gulls, and kittiwakes, cultural remains, and walrus haulouts. Cruise down Liefdefjorden, standing in awe where the Monaco glacier meets the sea, and/or landing at Texas Bar, an historic trappers’ hut. Land at Sallyhamna, a hut built in 1937, rich in history and cultural remains from the 1600s whaling period. Take a Zodiac cruise of Fjortende Julbreen, a stunning glacier, and Fjortende Julibukta, a scenic bay in Krossfjord. Return to Isfjorden and Longyearbyen.

This was our first trip to South America and we were a little nervous. But Adventure Life made things so easy! All our questions were answered before we left, and our guide, Vidal, was amazing! He gave us enough space to explore without rushing us along. He also knew where the best picture taking opportunities were, which was great.
