The settlement has about 25 miles of roads and is divided into several neighborhoods, including the town center and Nybyen. Nybyen contains former miners’ barracks built after World War II, along with guesthouses, a restaurant, and a gallery. The mountain Hiorthfjellet is visible across the fjord. The name “Ittoqqortoormiit” means “Big-House Dwellers” in the Eastern Greenlandic dialect.
