The Coral Discoverer is an intimate expedition vessel that perfectly blends comfort with adventure. Purpose-built for exploring remote and remarkable destinations from the Great Barrier Reef to rugged coastlines and island passages, it carries a maximum of just 72 guests in 36 outside-facing staterooms, offering a personal and unhurried cruising experience that larger ships simply can’t match. The ship sails most of her season around the Australian coastline, but also includes itineraries to Tasmania and Papua New Guinea. See all Coral Discoverer Departures here.

I sailed with them in December 2025 on the Outerknown Adventures on the Great Barrier Reef cruise with my 10-year-old daughter. Here are my thoughts and feedback about the ship itself and the overall experience.

Accommodation & Interior Refresh

One of the first things you notice aboard is the recently refurbished interior design, which felt clean, modern, and thoughtfully updated for comfort. The cabins are well-appointed with excellent storage — we honestly used maybe half of what was available — and large bathrooms that feel generous for a ship of this size, complete with a good-sized shower and a hair dryer. All staterooms have en-suite facilities and ocean views, which help keep the experience bright and open. The interior of the ship does have 4 decks open to passengers, including an open bridge. Passengers must be able to and willing to navigate stairs even in rough seas between these decks, as the ship does not have elevators.

Connectivity & Practical Comforts

A big plus for me was the complimentary Wi-Fi. It was surprisingly robust, enough for my work needs and even video calls, which isn’t always a given on expedition ships. There’s also a premium Starlink package available for those who want even faster speeds at an additional cost. Having reliable connectivity made a big difference in balancing work and travel.

Dining & Beverages

Meals on Coral Discoverer were a genuine highlight. Drinks included with meals were ample and enjoyable, from excellent coffee and tea to hot chocolate, and satisfied all our needs. The menu itself was excellent. The chef clearly knows how to handle special diets with flair: gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options were not just adequate, but genuinely delicious. My kid was thoroughly spoiled with kid-friendly meals throughout the cruise, which was such a relief and added to the enjoyment for our whole family.

Excursions & Expedition Experience

The expedition experience, especially in the Great Barrier Reef region, was superb. The ship’s tender setup, particularly the Xplorer and expedition platform, made getting on and off the water incredibly easy. It’s one of the best I’ve seen for seamless boarding and disembarking, particularly for guests with mobility concerns. Small details like this matter on adventure cruises, and Coral Discoverer excels here.

The excursions were varied and engaging, from snorkeling vibrant reefs to guided outings with cultural insights. Onboard lectures from reef experts and local cultural specialists were entertaining, informative, and deeply enriching. Every aspect of the off-ship programming felt purposeful, well-paced, and grounded in genuine expertise.

Crew & Service

The crew and expedition staff were exceptional — knowledgeable, approachable, and truly dedicated to creating a memorable experience. Whether staffing excursions, running onboard briefings, or sharing local insights over dinner, they elevated the trip in ways that made us feel both welcome and well cared for. Coral Expeditions, the operator of the ship, did a fantastic job.

Why I Recommend It

Overall, Coral Discoverer delivers a standout small-ship expedition cruise experience. From the refreshed interiors and comfortable cabins to reliable Wi-Fi, thoughtful dining, effortless excursions, and remarkable staff, it’s a ship that combines ease and exploration beautifully. I’d highly recommend this vessel and expedition company to anyone looking for a meaningful, immersive adventure on the water.
