Kangaroo Island sits 15 km off South Australia's coast, a short flight from Adelaide. Most things to do on Kangaroo Island bring you close to its wildlife. On Australia land tours that include the island, you may watch sea lions rest at Seal Bay, spot koalas in the eucalyptus, and walk among the rock formations of Flinders Chase.

Where Is Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is about 112 km southwest of Adelaide, separated from the mainland by a 15 km strait called Backstairs Passage. It's Australia's third-largest island, spanning 4,416 square km, roughly 155 km long and 55 km wide.

That size matters when you visit: the sea lions, parks, and caves are spread along the south and west coasts rather than gathered in one spot. More than half of Kangaroo Island's native vegetation remains, and almost a third of the island is protected in national and conservation parks.

Kangaroo Island Attractions: Wildlife, Parks, and Caves

The island's highlights are its wildlife and coastline, from the sea lion beach on the south coast to the weathered granite of Flinders Chase in the west.

Visit the Australian sea lions at Seal Bay
Seal Bay is home to the third-largest colony of Australian sea lions, an endangered species. With a guide, you follow a boardwalk into the colony and may see sea lions stretched out on the sand.

Koalas, kangaroos, and other native wildlife
Koalas may cling to the eucalyptus at Hanson Bay Sanctuary, and kangaroos and wallabies come out to feed around dusk. Keep an eye out for echidnas on the ground and ospreys overhead.

Flinders Chase National Park: Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch
Flinders Chase National Park occupies the island's western end. Its landmarks include Remarkable Rocks, a group of 500-million-year-old weathered granite boulders, and Admirals Arch near the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, home to a colony of long-nosed fur seals.

About 96% of the park burned in the 2019–20 bushfires. Today the bush has regrown, and the visitor centre, the Remarkable Rocks boardwalk, and the park roads have been rebuilt.

Kelly Hill Caves
Kelly Hill Caves lead you underground on a guided tour, a change of scene from the coast. The park reopened in December 2023, rebuilt after the 2019–20 fires.

Coastal walks and island food
Self-guided trails near Hanson Bay trace the coast and bushland, and longer routes cross the island's southwest parks over several days. Meals may feature the island's own produce, from honey made by Ligurian bees to local wine and seafood.

Adelaide to Kangaroo Island: By Plane or Ferry

Kangaroo Island is about 35 minutes by plane from Adelaide to Kingscote, or 45 minutes by ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw. On a guided trip, the crossing can be handled for you, from the drive to Adelaide Airport to the transfer that meets you in Kingscote.

How Many Days Do You Need on Kangaroo Island?

3 days gives a first look at Kangaroo Island, and 5 days takes in the main sights. Because Seal Bay, Flinders Chase, and Kelly Hill are far apart, a single day reaches only some of the highlights.

With 3 nights on the island, you may spend full days with guides at the wildlife sites and parks, with time left for walks near your lodge.

Kangaroo Island Weather and the Best Time to Visit

You can visit Kangaroo Island in any season; what changes is the weather and the wildlife. Average maximum temperatures run about 24°C (75°F) in summer, 20°C (68°F) in autumn, 19°C (66°F) in spring, and 15°C (59°F) in winter, so spring and autumn offer mild days for walking, summer is warmest for the beaches, and winter is cool.

Wildlife timing matters too. Australian sea lion pups are generally born between January and June on an 18-month breeding cycle, long-nosed fur seal pups arrive in December and January, and winter adds kangaroo joeys and southern right whales offshore.

Seasons differ widely across the country, which changes the best time to visit Australia in other regions.

Kangaroos and wallabies come out at dusk, so a few nights on the island put you there for the evening wildlife as well as the days at Seal Bay and Flinders Chase. If you're unsure how long to stay, Adventure Life Trip Planners can talk you through what each extra day makes possible and which ways to see the island suit you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kangaroo Island

Can you see Kangaroo Island in one day?

You can see part of Kangaroo Island in a day, but the distances between Seal Bay, Flinders Chase, and Kelly Hill mean much of it would be left out. Kangaroo Island Tourism suggests 3 days for a first look and 5 days to cover the main sights.

What should you not miss on Kangaroo Island?

Seal Bay's sea lion colony, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase National Park, and the hour around dusk, when kangaroos and wallabies graze. With more time, Kelly Hill Caves and the trails near Hanson Bay round out a visit.

How big is Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island covers 4,416 square km and stretches about 155 km long and 55 km wide, making it Australia's third-largest island. That scale is why the island rewards several days rather than a day trip.
