Sydney is an outstanding destination for families, offering iconic sights, wildlife, beaches, and hands-on fun that truly work for kids around age 10. On a December 2025 trip to Australia with my daughter, Cora, we found Sydney easy to get around and full of memorable moments.
Darling Harbour: A Full Day of Family Fun
One of the best family-friendly hubs is Darling Harbour, where you can easily spend a full day. We used a single combination pass that included Madame Tussauds, the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, and WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo—and it also offered entry to Sydney Tower, which provides sweeping views of the city and harbour. We didn’t have time to visit the tower, but it’s a great value add for families who want a bird’s-eye perspective. Madame Tussauds was a hit with Cora, especially posing with Taylor Swift, the royal family, and Marvel characters. At the aquarium, we walked through underwater tunnels surrounded by sharks, stingrays, and even a dugong. WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo offered close-up encounters with kangaroos, crocodiles, and koalas without leaving the city center.
Nearby, Tumbalong Park features a huge play structure that Cora loved, while the Australian National Maritime Museum and IMAX theatre provide additional options if you have extra time.
Sydney Harbour Icons and Luna Park
Walking north along the harbour brought us closer to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where we could see Luna Park across the water. With its giant smiling entrance, vintage rides, and carnival atmosphere, Luna Park is especially appealing for younger kids and tweens. We chose not to visit due to time constraints, but it’s a classic Sydney experience. Another major attraction we skipped was Taronga Zoo, located across the harbour. This expansive zoo is considered one of the best in the world, with incredible harbour views, but it really requires a full day to do well—something to plan for rather than squeeze in.

Ferry Ride to Manly Beach
Families can also take a scenic ferry to Manly, which doubles as a mini harbour cruise. In Manly, you’ll find a relaxed beach town with a pedestrian-friendly promenade, calm coves, ocean beaches, shops, and casual restaurants—an ideal half- or full-day outing, even though we didn’t manage it this trip.
The Rocks and Classic Sydney Treats
We spent time in The Rocks, enjoying afternoon tea at The Tea Cozy in an old-fashioned setting and watching a mesmerizing candy-making demonstration at Sticky, famous from YouTube. Shopping here felt local and lively, and we also explored the stunning Queen Victoria Building, a historic shopping mall with beautiful architecture. Along the way, we grabbed classic Australian meat pies, a traditional and kid-friendly lunch option.
Best Beaches for Families
For beach time, Bondi Beach and Balmoral Beach are top choices. Bondi is iconic and energetic, popular with families and kids, though wave conditions can be stronger. It’s safest for beginner swimmers during calm weather and always within the flagged swimming areas. Balmoral Beach, by contrast, is much calmer, sheltered, and ideal for younger or less confident swimmers.
Chinatown and Easy Food Wins
Finally, Chinatown was a highlight. Cora loved sipping boba tea while we watched plates of dim sum pass by at busy restaurants. It was a fun, sensory-rich way to end our days.
