Ilha Grande Adventures

For outdoor enthusiasts, Ilha Grande offers an exciting array of hiking opportunities. One of the island’s most iconic routes is the Pico do Papagaio trek—a challenging hike through dense forest that rewards you with breathtaking views from the island’s second-highest peak.

For beach lovers, Lopes Mendes Beach is a must-visit destination, celebrated for its powdery white sand and excellent surfing conditions. Beyond Lopes Mendes, the island is home to several other beautiful and diverse beaches worth exploring, such as Praia do Aventureiro, with its iconic bent palm tree, and Praia de Dois Rios, known for its remote charm and historical ruins.

Water activities are just as enticing. Paddle along the coast by kayak, join a schooner cruise with snorkeling stops at vibrant underwater spots like the Blue Lagoon, or go diving to discover the island’s rich marine life and shipwrecks beneath its crystal-clear waters.

Tip: These tours can get crowded—choose a smaller boat and visit less popular beaches for a more peaceful experience.

Brazil Unplugged

Ilha Grande is a place to disconnect. With no taxis or roads, you’ll explore on foot or by water taxi. The atmosphere is relaxed and rustic—ideal for those looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in nature. Due to those conditions, the island is not suitable for travelers with limited mobility, as paths are unpaved and distances can be long.
Accommodation on Ilha Grande is mostly made up of simple guesthouses (pousadas) and B&B-style properties, known for their cozy charm and welcoming atmosphere. Most offer a modest breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, eggs, and cold cuts. For travelers looking for a bit more comfort and privacy, there are more upscale options located further from the main village—some of which are only accessible by boat, adding to their sense of seclusion.

Note: A porter service can help with luggage—make sure this is arranged in advance for a smooth arrival.

Essential Tips

  • Cash up: While many places accept cards, there are no ATMs on the island. Bring cash for tips, water taxis, and small vendors.
  • Pack smart: Bring comfortable shoes for walking and hiking.
  • Transfers: The trip from Rio takes around 5–6 hours—a private transfer is the most convenient option.
  • Timing: Boat tours typically start around 10 AM. Book early, especially in high season.
