Salmon runs are a natural event that features the life cycle and migration of Pacific salmon. These fish journey thousands of kilometers from the ocean to their freshwater birthplaces to spawn. Appreciating this natural wonder is far from possible without knowing how these impressive runs work, why they are ecologically important and also when to safely view them in the right places.

How Salmon Runs Work

  1. Ocean Life: Salmon are born in freshwater rivers and streams but spend several years maturing in the ocean, growing larger and stronger.
  2. Homing Instinct: A homing instinct guides adult salmon back to their original stream/rivers where they were born. Although the precise methods are still being researched, it is thought that either scent (smell), magnetic fields and potentially even star navigation contribute to this.
  3. Upstream Journey: Salmon can travel hundreds of kilometers upstream through obstacles such as strong currents, waterfalls or predators. It shows how they withstand living to move many hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.
  4. Spawning and Death: When females reach their spawning locations, they lay eggs which are fertilized by the males. Both parents usually die after spawning. Their corpses enrich the river environment and create a nutrient-rich backdrop for future generations.

Why Salmon Runs Are Special

  • Ecological Keystone Species: Salmon are keystone species, which means that their presence has a major impact on ecosystem health and biodiversity. Their decomposing remains provide essential nutrients to plants and animals along the riverbanks, helping a wide range of species. They are also an important food source for other species, especially bears, who rely on the availability of salmon during the spawning season.
  • Biological Marvel: The precision of salmon's homing instinct is a fascinating example of biological navigation and adaptation. Their ability to return to their exact origin after years at sea is an object of mystery and scientific curiosity.
  • Cultural Significance: Salmon runs have long been a key source of subsistence and a central aspect of the Pacific Northwest's Indigenous peoples' culture and traditions. These runs are firmly rooted in their spiritual and cultural values.
  • Economic Importance: Salmon fishing and related sectors are important economic drivers in many coastal communities. Protecting salmon flows is important for local livelihoods and regional economies.

When and Where to See Salmon Runs

Salmon runs occur at different times and locations based on the species and geography. To watch salmon runs:
  • Investigate which salmon species are present in the Atnarko River area, as different species migrate at different times of the year. This will help in predicting the best time to witness the salmon run and the associated grizzly bear activity.
  • Salmon runs vary by species and location, influencing the optimal time for bear viewing. While generally occurring in late summer and fall (August-November), the exact period depends on water temperature and other environmental factors.
  • The precise timing of the salmon run and the best bear viewing opportunities are influenced by water temperature and other environmental conditions.  These can vary from year to year, impacting the ideal travel dates.
  • Always observe salmon and bears from a safe distance.  Avoid disturbing the fish, their spawning habitats, or other wildlife. Respect the natural environment and ensure your presence doesn't negatively impact the ecosystem.
