Day 2: Mayreau Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Mayreau, the smallest Grenadines' uninhabited isle, spans 4 sq km. Its population, around 250, resides atop Station Hill, offering splendid island views. The quaint church and community center provide stunning vistas. On clear days, behold Grenada, St. Vincent, and nearby isles, showcasing vibrant reef colors around Tobago Cays' waters.
Aruba's capital, Oranjestad, harmonizes old and modern, exuding colorful charm. A bustling harbor city with international luxury retailers, diverse boutiques, and captivating residential structures. Notable restored sites include the 'Stadhuis' housing City Hall. The Aloe Museum and Factory, since 1890, narrate aloe's economic significance.
The lively capital of Curacao Island stands as a welcoming and energizing travel destination, comprising two neighborhoods on either side of the beautiful St. Anna Bay. Narrow, well-kept streets characterize Punda, hosting stores and museums. On the flip side of the bay lies Otrobanda, a residential zone with winding streets – a true maze that sharply differs from the perpendicular streets on the opposite bay side. Colorful colonial architecture graces Wilemstad, meriting its UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition.
In the northern reaches of Colombia's La Guajira region rests the unmissable Cabo de la Vela destination, regarded as one of Colombia's best-kept secrets. This site hosts one of the calmest and most paradisiacal beaches situated in Colombia's broadest desert expanse. This advantageous site along the Caribbean shores presents stunning landscapes featuring diverse ecosystems, affording optimal conditions for relishing unforgettable experiences.
An occasion to partake in a day of yacht swimming and enjoyment with marina toys awaits.
Santa Marta's welcoming sign proclaims, "Here all is attainable" – a truth evident in the extensive array of activities within reach. Beyond the splendid beaches and dynamic urban scene, Santa Marta showcases a rich historical and cultural legacy – it stands as Colombia's oldest standing city, tracing its origins to 1525. Simon Bolivar, the liberator of South America, breathed his last at La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, with the Cathedral safeguarding his remains until 1842. Presently, La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino functions as a museum commemorating Bolivar's life, encompassing a tour of the nearby astounding gardens that harbor a multitude of Colombia's exquisite tropical flora.
Situated on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena de Indias uniquely combines the charm of colonial architecture and the excitement of vivid modern life. The city gains renown for fascinating cultural festivals, breathtaking landscapes, and excellent cuisine. This fabulous city holds Latin American history secrets within Old Town walls and narrow stone walkways. It ranks among the Americas' most well-preserved cities and has sparked artistic inspiration across history, including author Gabriel García Márquez, honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
The San Blas archipelago stands as a group of islands located just north-west of Panama in the Caribbean Sea. Within the archipelago, 378 islands are scattered across an area of approximately 100 square miles. The majority of the islands remain uninhabited; however, on a few of the larger ones, encounters with the native people, recognized as the Kunas, are possible. Officially referred to as Kuna Yala (‘Land of the Kuna’), San Blas emerges as an autonomous Panama territory celebrated for its unspoiled nature and traditional culture.
A passage through the Panama Canal unfolds – the most renowned attraction in Panama. Regarded as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Modern World,’ this canal materialized to substantially reduce ship travel time between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Throughout its existence, over 900,000 vessels have traversed this canal and the count continues, portraying an engineering marvel that was initially deemed impossible to construct. Encounter this extraordinary waterway firsthand.

This was our first trip to South America and we were a little nervous. But Adventure Life made things so easy! All our questions were answered before we left, and our guide, Vidal, was amazing! He gave us enough space to explore without rushing us along. He also knew where the best picture taking opportunities were, which was great.

Mary was super helpful and patient. Answered every question and with candor (answers of “Everything’s equally great” aren’t helpful! 😎).

The trip planner I worked with, Jane, was excellent. She had travelled to Antarctica twice and was the voice of experience as she explained travel options to me. I've travelled internationally for many years for many years for business and pleasure including a number of adventure trips. It is a delight to work with such an experienced planner. I've used Adventure Life for three trips, Costa Rica, Galapagos and upcoming, Antarctica. I highly recommend them.
