Visit the tropical archipelago of Puerto Rico, home to more than 3 million residents and known for its stunning beaches. Puerto Rico cruises offer a unique way to experience the island, with small ships accessing secluded coves, coral reefs, and pleasing ports that larger vessels cannot reach. With both Spanish and English widely spoken, Puerto Rico is easy and comfortable to visit.

Relax on white-sand beaches such as Culebrita, Cayo Icacos, Boquerón, and Vieques, which is ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving in clear, calm waters. For a change of scenery, visit the rainforest at Cabezas de San Juan Reserva Natural, or head to San Juan, the island’s capital, where historic charm meets wide beaches, lively nightlife, and world-class dining.

Puerto Rico can also be paired with small ship cruises to other Caribbean islands for a seamless island-hopping journey. Contact one of our trip planners today to start planning your cruise or tour to Puerto Rico.

The Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico

Between mid-December and June
is the best time to visit Puerto Rico. This is the high season so lodging will be more expensive and there will be larger crowds throughout the popular destinations (especially in San Juan) but the temperature is extremely comfortable and there's the most to do in the city during these months. As the season wanes on, towards April and June, lodging prices will begin to drop as crowds begin to dwindle - and these months are considered the absolute best time to visit Puerto Rico.

Between July and September is the worst time to visit Puerto Rico. Prices and crowds will be at their lowest point but quite a few hotels will be closed due to the upcoming hurricane season. Additionally, it will be warm and humid but you should expect rain, especially going in to August.

Between October and mid-December is an excellent time to visit Puerto Rico. The prices on hotels and airfare are down and crowds haven't begun getting too big yet. The temperature is extremely comfortable and there will be little-to-no-rain. The only downside is some restaurants and hotels may not be done getting remodeled after the extended off-season.

FAQs

What is Puerto Rico famous for?

Puerto Rico is best known for its gorgeous beaches and tropical setting, with dozens of sandy shores and clear water that draw visitors from around the world. It’s also home to the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. national forest system, El Yunque, and glowing bioluminescent bays where the water lights up at night.

The island mixes old-world charm and history in places like Old San Juan, with colorful colonial buildings and forts, with fun outdoor activities like surfing, snorkeling, and hiking. You’ll find lively music, tasty local food, and a warm, friendly vibe wherever you go.

How many days in Puerto Rico is enough?

For most visitors, about 5 to 7 days in Puerto Rico is a good amount of time to see the highlights without feeling rushed. Within a week, you can enjoy Old San Juan, spend time in the rainforest, visit nice beaches, and even squeeze in a day trip or two around the island.

If you’re short on time, 4 to 5 days still lets you hit the main spots and really soak in a few experiences.

And if you have 10 days or more, you can wander farther, visit islands like Vieques or Culebra, and take it at a more relaxed pace.

What is a must do in Puerto Rico?

A classic must-do in Puerto Rico is spending time in Old San Juan. Wander its colorful streets, check out the old forts like Castillo San Felipe del Morro, enjoy the ocean views, and have a local drink in one of the plazas. This historic part of the island really gives you a feel for its past and lively present.

Other activities that many visitors love are hiking El Yunque National Forest, relaxing on beautiful beaches, kayaking at night in a bioluminescent bay, and trying local food along La Ruta del Lechon.
