Set on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi, Finland, is the official home of Santa Claus and the gateway to a snowy Lapland winter. This 5-day escape settles you into a luxury igloo and spa resort tucked into the forest, with a junior suite framed by woodland views made for watching the aurora. From here, the days fill with the far north at its best: crossing the Arctic Circle to meet Santa, dropping a line through the ice and cooking your catch over a campfire, and driving a snowmobile through the trees and out across frozen Lake Palojarvi. Each clear evening brings a guided hunt for the Northern Lights, and quieter afternoons melt into lakeside saunas and steaming outdoor hot tubs. It is the Arctic winter distilled into five unforgettable days.

Day 1: Arrive in Rovaniemi

Touch down in Rovaniemi and transfer to your luxury igloo-and-spa resort, tucked into the region's snowy forests. Settle into a junior suite framed by woodland views, well placed for catching the Northern Lights right from your window, and ease into the rhythm of the far north with Finnish spa traditions, fine dining, and a lakeside sauna close at hand.

Day 2: Santa Claus Village and Arctic Spa

After breakfast, ride out to Santa Claus Village for a few hours of year-round Christmas cheer. Meet Santa, shop for Lappish gifts, and mail postcards stamped by the elves' own post office. Cross the Arctic Circle line to collect your official certificate before sitting down to a lunch buffet. Spend the afternoon at the Arctic spa, easing into the lakeside sauna, outdoor hot tubs, and steam room ringed by peaceful forest.

Day 3: Ice Fishing and a Northern Lights Hunt

Following breakfast, join your guide on the resort's frozen lake to learn the art of ice fishing while taking in the winter scenery. Gather around a campfire to cook your catch, and if the fish aren't biting, you'll still tuck into Arctic salmon, Lappish bread, and hot blueberry juice, with all equipment and winter overalls provided. As night falls, head into the Arctic wilderness with an expert guide on a Northern Lights hunt, warming up over a campfire with a Lappish barbecue of pork sausage, marshmallows, and hot blueberry juice, with a vegetarian or vegan option on request. Northern Lights sightings depend on weather and solar activity and cannot be guaranteed.

Day 4: Snowmobiling a Frozen Lake

After breakfast, take the controls of a snowmobile for a ride through the Arctic forest and out across frozen Lake Palojarvi, with routes suited to both beginners and experienced drivers, and hot blueberry juice along the way. A valid driver's license is required to operate a snowmobile, and two people share each snowmobile, switching drivers at the halfway point. Riders shorter than 140 cm (55 in) travel in a sled pulled by the guide, while those 150 cm (59 in) or taller can ride as an adult. You can also combine the tour with a short night ride in search of the aurora. Spend the afternoon relaxing at the Arctic spa.

Day 5: Return Home

  • 1 Breakfast
Enjoy a final breakfast and check out of the resort. Your guide collects you from your accommodation and drives you to the airport, sending you home with plenty of unforgettable memories from the Arctic.
