Day 2: Fly Egilsstaðir | Stórurð Hike | Bakkagerði
1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Transfer this morning to the airport for your early AM domestic flight to Egilsstaðir on the east side of the island. Meet up with your hiking group here and set out towards Borgarfjörður Eystri, which lies about 55 miles to the coast. En route, stop close to the pass for today's hike towards a little oasis named Stórurð, which offers amazing views of the Dyrfjöll mountain range. Eat lunch here before continuing the hike along the northern side of the mountains to Njarðvík where you meet your pickup and head to the little village of Bakkagerði where you will overnight. After dinner, wander around and explore this tiny town.
Hiking: 11 miles (18km) / 6-8 hours
Total ascent/descent: 1970ft (600 m) / 2625 ft (800m)
Day 3: Brúnavík Inlet | Breiðavík Inlet
1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Today set out hiking up a low pass and down into the Brúnavík Inlet, which is more like a hidden cove along the coast. Here enjoy the sound of the waves from the North Atlantic Ocean before continuing the hike into a valley and over the Súluskarð Pass. From here enjoy the views of the colorful hills and mountaintops nearby. Descend down into Kjólsvík Inlet and continue along the path over the lower Kjólsvíkurvarp Pass until you arrive with your descent down into Breiðavík Inlet. As one of the largest deserted inlets in the area, hiking here gives you a sense of feeling completely removed from civilization.
Hiking: 9 miles (14km) / 7-9 hours
Total ascent/descent: 1315 ft (400m) / 1315 ft (400m)
Day 4: Húsavík Inlet
1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Leave the colorful valley of Breiðavík this morning and set out hiking over the mountains towards the Húsavík Inlet. If weather permits today, the group climbs nearby Hvítserkur Mountain, one of the most colorful mountains which descends into the valley leading toward Húsavík. Spend the evening with a walk along the beach or a visit to the historic yet now abandoned village church. Overnight at the hut in Húsavík.
Hiking: 8 miles (13 km) / 5-7 hours
Total ascent/descent: 800 ft (550) / 1640 ft (500 m)
Day 5: Loðmundarfjörður fjord
1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Today your hike leads you to the valley of Loðmundarfjörður fjord. The stunning scenery along the way is evidence of an ancient and massive mountainslide which burst out and nearly caused the mountain to collapse on itself. Hike through this amazing display of power and through the once well-populated valley. Take in the breathtaking scenery of the surrounding mountains and finish your hike to the fjord where your mountain hut awaits. Visit another old and abandoned church in this area.
Hiking: 9 miles (15 km) / 5-7 hours
Total ascent/descent: 1970 ft (600m) / 1970 ft (600m)
Enjoy your last hiking day by following an old path over Hjálmárdalsheiði. This used to be the main 'highway' between the Loðmundarfjörður valley farms and the Seyðisfjörður harbor and trading post. As you ascend the pass, the view to the southern fjords and mountaintops becomes visible. From Hall Pass you can see Seyðisfjörður in full view. Descend into the fjord, whose impressive panoramas and surrounding majestic mountains make it one of the most pictureque of your entire hike. Arrive to the main road here where you board your bus back to Egilsstaðir. Arrive in time for the late afternoon domestic flight to Reykjavik where you return to your hotel this evening.
Hiking: 9 miles (15km) / 5-7 hours
Total Ascent/Descent: 1970 ft (600m) / 1970 ft (600m)

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
