Day 1 Arrive Reykjavik

Arrive to Reykjavik anytime today and settle in to your hotel this evening. Spend your day exploring Reykjavik on your own and ensure to pick up your rental car today in anticipation of your first day of Iceland touring tomorrow.

Day 2 Golden Circle Tour

Set out this morning at your own set time to tour the Golden Circle at your pace. Be sure to obtain your own driving directions and check the weather on Iceland's safe travels site safetravel.is to ensure your plans are still viable. Visit first Þingvellir National Park. This is the site for the ancient Viking parliament and a unique place where the continental drift of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge can be observed above ground. Travel next to the Geysir and Strokkur geyser geothermal areas. At Strokkur you can see the geyser erupt almost every 10 minutes. Visit Gullfoss Waterfall next, one of the most impressive and powerful displays in Iceland. Travel south to complete the loop and finish up at Hotel Grimsborgir, a nice and upscale retreat at the end of a long day of touring.

Day 3 Þríhyrningur Hike & Bike

  • Hotel
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch
Travel today to Hvolsvöllur where you meet up mid morning at the base for your adventure guides today. Join a pooled tour of other adventurers on a full-day hiking and biking tour in the Þríhyrningur mountain region, just 10 km inland from Hvolsvöllur. This extinct volcano is one of the most striking in the region, and located away from the typical tourist circuit, which offers a more private encounter with the landscape. Set out on your fatbike first from Keldur farmstead. Bike along gravel roads and some grassy tracks past beautiful waterfalls and through rivers towards the Fljótshlid Valley. Enjoy a packed lunch and drive to the trailhead next for your hike up the Þríhyrningur peak. Hike the mountain and admire a breathtaking view in every direction from the summit. On a clear visibility day, you can spot Vestmannaeyjar, Þórsmörk, Tindfjöll, Hekla and the Fljótshlíð valley from its peak. Return to the adventure base in Hvolsvöllur to hop back in your car and head back to Hotel Grimsborgir this evening.

Ascent/Descent hiking time: 2 hours
*This tour can easily be substitued for a number of other small group guided tours in South Iceland today.

Day 4 Free day | Return Reykjavik

  • 1 Breakfast
Spend your day as you like before returning to Reykjavik. If you have your car rental for the entire day, then a recommended use of the day would be to set out further east towards Skafafell Park or Vatnajokull Ice Cap and Jokulsarlon Lagoon. The renowned waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss are easy sites to see along the main highway, or you can opt to spend the day hiking in Thorsmork. The day is yours to plan as you like.
