Day 1: The Grand South Coast & Northern Lights

Rise early for a 9:00 am pickup from your hotel or closest Reykjavík meeting point. Over the next two days you will experience mesmerizing views of waterfalls and mountain landscapes, vast lava fields and glacier tongues.  Head south through scenic villages and farmlands toward the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland's most unusual and well-known falls. If weather permits, take a walk behind the falling cascade for a unique, exciting waterfall experience! We continue onward to the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, passing by another waterfall along the way. Take in the unique beauty of this coastal area, admiring the distant peaks and marveling at the basalt column formations rising out of the Atlantic Ocean. From here we drive through the charming town of Vik and settle at our accommodation in the Skaftafell area. This area close to Vatnajökull glacier is ideal for spotting the Northern Lights. Enjoy a relaxing evening in the Icelandic countryside, but keep your eyes on the vast night sky!

Overnight at Hótel Geirland or similar.

Day 2: Land of Ice & Northern Lights

  • 1 Breakfast
Enjoy an early breakfast before setting out toward Vatnajökull National Park, home to natural ice caves, glacier lagoons, stunning landscape and the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier. Stop first at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a photogenic glacial lake filed with blue and white icebergs. Many of these ice sculptures end their journey on the nearby Diamond Beach, washing up on this pebbly shore.

Our next adventure is one you are sure not to forget! With a qualified glacier guide, you will have the opportunity to explore a natural ice cave in Vatnajökull glacier, learning about the wondrous world of ice. After this exhilarating adventure we slowly find our way back to Reykjavík. Make a short stop at Skaftafell Nature Reserve, exploring this lush reserve in the midst of glacier-topped peaks and craggy mountains. Keep a close eye on the Icelandic sky, in search of the ever-elusive Northern Lights lighting up the darkness.

We return to Reykjavík around 9:00 pm.

Beyond expectations! Then again we weren't sure what to expect. Lovely stay at the lodge, met other like-minded travelers (many had their trips planned by Adventure Life) and the owner was a gracious hostess. It felt like you were one happy family, visiting with a favorite aunt.
