Mihir Garh means Sun fortress. It is a 50-minute drive to the south of Jodhpur and is located on the edge of the Thar Desert. A gorgeous, 9-suite fantasy fort in the Thar Desert with private plunge pools, Royal Picnics, and Marwar horse-riding.
Mihir Garh is an exclusive nine suite boutique hotel where each room offers you more than 1700 sq. of pure luxury. The private terraces, courtyards, plunge pools, and Jacuzzi seems to whisper a single word: Indulge. Here, serenity and splendor come together to create an experience for all the guests. While exotic drinks from your mini-bar become the manna for a sultry summer afternoon, the fireplace morphs into an intimate friend for wintry nights. You can pamper yourself with the variety of treatments available at Mihir Garh's spa or rejuvenate at the poolside while watching the endless desert meditate on the horizon. The delectable cuisines aim to please - from traditional to continental - to suit your palate.
Mihir Garh acts as an envoy of Rajasthan's rich heritage and culture. The majestic fort emerges from the desert and complements the rugged beauty of the land. The workmen (over a hundred of them) come from the region itself and bring in the local lilt. The soft, stylish furnishings have been bought from the Jodhpur region alone. The village women of Khandi and Haji have lovingly created the fireplaces using the age-old technique of cow dung and clay! From paintings to curtain holders, every little thing has been specially designed for Mihir Garh and handcrafted by local craftsmen.
Mihir Garh offers you a plethora of activities. The village Safari is the signature program, and guests across cultures have referred to it as the "highlight" of their stay. The equestrian program is equally special as the horses belong to the famed ˜Marwari' breed - an ancient and indigenous breed of India, offering you an unparalleled riding experience. Alfresco breakfasts, amidst nature, ensure your day begins well. Royal picnics from an era long gone beside a lake so you can luxuriate under the specially designed tent while the traditionally dressed attendants cosset every need of yours. Culinary workshops and demonstrations are held, so the guests can learn to make the delicacies on their own. The recipes come from books on traditional Rajasthan cooking authored by the owner's mother, Late Thakurani Sahiba Jayendra Kumari.

Beyond expectations! Then again we weren't sure what to expect. Lovely stay at the lodge, met other like-minded travelers (many had their trips planned by Adventure Life) and the owner was a gracious hostess. It felt like you were one happy family, visiting with a favorite aunt.

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.

Mary was so pleasant and professional. She made sure all of our questions were answered.
