The crowds in Japan are REAL. Locals seem resigned to standing in line for just about everything. Coming from Montana, where crowds are rarely a concern, I felt overwhelmed at first by the sheer volume of people. Even though I’m reasonably well-traveled, it took some adjustment not to let this factor impact my trip. We pushed the limits of crowded sites by visiting two theme parks, the World Expo, and many of the most popular tourist sites—all during spring, considered by many the best time to visit Japan. Despite the crowds, we still managed to see everything we wanted, thanks to Japan’s exceptional efficiency in crowd management. Here are some suggestions to help minimize the stress and make crowds more bearable.

Expect to Queue Often

Once I adjusted to the idea of waiting in line for nearly everything, it became less stressful. Lines in Japan often move four or five times faster than what I’m used to back home. While hundreds of people in line can feel intimidating, the Japanese have perfected crowd management. With that in mind, it’s easier to relax and patiently wait with the locals.

Be Prepared

I have never seen so many umbrellas in one place! Locals carry them everywhere because heavy downpours can begin suddenly. Remembering little things—like using the restroom ahead of time, applying sunscreen, or bringing a water bottle—makes a world of difference. Small discomforts can make waits feel much longer, so being prepared keeps things manageable.

Start Early

One benefit of jet lag is that your body isn’t on the same schedule as the locals. Use this to your advantage by arriving early or staying late to avoid peak hours, which also tend to be the hottest parts of the day.

Make Advance Reservations

Unlike many destinations, Japan truly rewards those who plan ahead. Advance reservations for meals, museums, guided tours, and entrance passes can be a lifesaver. Many sites require them, and even those that don’t often have faster entry for reserved guests. Use Japan’s tech-savvy systems to your benefit and book as much as possible in advance.

Consider Where and When You Travel

If you have flexibility, avoid the busiest spring months—though many travelers agree that cherry blossom season, or Sakura Japan, is a magical experience worth the crowds. Alternatively, fall offers equally comfortable weather and fewer visitors. If traveling in peak season, venture off the beaten path to less-visited regions. Our local partners excel at suggesting where and when to maximize your experience while minimizing the crowds.
