Moderately active but not overly strenuous. This level includes activities like casual cycling, yoga, or excursions/activities that typically last 3-5 hours total each day.
Welcome to Morocco! Upon arrival, meet your tour manager at Casablanca airport. After introductions, travel to Rabat, Morocco’s current imperial capital. Check in to your accommodation, then head out on a guided tour of the city. Visit key landmarks, including the Royal Palace, Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Kasbah of the Udayas.
After breakfast, leave Rabat and travel north into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, Morocco’s Blue City. This small mountain town sits between two peaks that resemble horns. “Chaouen” comes from the Berber word for horn and gives the city its name.
Check in to your accommodation, then join your tour manager for an orientation walk through town. After getting familiar with the area, explore at your leisure. In the late afternoon, hike up to the Spanish Mosque, ask your tour manager for directions, or follow the footpath to watch the sunset over the blue-washed city.
Spend the day at your leisure, taking in Chefchaouen's blue charm. Wander the painted streets, then take a break in the main square for a relaxed meal, or stop by Hotel Parador for a drink. Visit the small waterfall at Ras el Ma and watch locals use the nearby traditional washing area.
For an optional adventure, head about 20 minutes outside town to the Akchour River trailhead. Follow the scenic path along the river toward the Cascade d’Akchour waterfall. The full route covers roughly 10 miles round trip, but the out-and-back trail lets you turn around whenever you choose.
After breakfast, leave Chefchaouen and travel south toward Fez, stopping along the way at the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Before Roman rule, this site stood as an Amazigh city known as Oulili, dating back to the 3rd century BC. Despite damage from an 18th-century earthquake and later stone removal under Moulay Ismail, Volubilis remains an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Roman colonial town on the edge of the empire, recognized by UNESCO. Local Amazigh tribes reclaimed the site around 235 AD, and nearby in the 8th century, Idriss I established the first Moroccan dynasty.
Continue to the imperial city of Meknes and enter the old medina through Bab Mansour, an ornate gate built with marble columns taken from Volubilis. Inside the medina, visit the tomb of Sultan Moulay Ismail, whose reign from 1672 to 1727 marks Meknes as Morocco’s capital. Visit the Agdal reservoir and explore Heri es-Souani, the former granary and royal stables that once housed thousands of horses. After exploring Meknes, continue the short drive to Fez and settle in for the night.
After breakfast, meet your local guide at your riad and begin exploring this medieval city. Begin with a drive to the Royal Palace, then take a walk through the old Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, where the architecture showcases a distinct style. If Jewish heritage interests you, ask your guide to point out key sites in the area.
Continue to one of the city’s borjs (fortified towers) along the ancient walls for panoramic views over the medina. Fez contains the world’s largest pedestrian-only old city, with more than 9,000 narrow streets and alleyways, best appreciated from above.
Next, visit a mosaic workshop to watch traditional Fassi pottery and tile-making techniques, from shaping clay to assembling intricate mosaic patterns. Your driver then takes you as close as possible to the medina, where your guide leads you through the historic gates and into the maze-like streets. Explore artisan quarters, including the famous tanneries, and visit major historic sites such as the tomb of Idriss II and Al-Qarawiyyin University, the world’s oldest continuously operating university.
The guided tour ends in the mid-afternoon, leaving time to explore independently or relax with a traditional hammam and massage.
After breakfast, depart from Fes and begin your journey toward the Sahara Desert. Your first stop is Ifrane, a mountain town known for its alpine architecture and clean, European-style atmosphere. Pass through the city center to see the famous Atlas lion statue and enjoy a quick coffee or pastry in the main square.
Continue into the Middle Atlas Mountains, driving through Africa’s largest cedar forest. Here, watch for the playful Barbary macaques that inhabit the area. After crossing the Middle Atlas, travel through Midelt, set between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, before continuing along the dramatic landscapes of the Ziz River Gorge.
As you descend from the mountains, the scenery gradually transforms into desert terrain. Arrive in the oasis town of Erfoud, then continue to Merzouga, located on the edge of the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi. Upon arrival, check in to your guesthouse and unwind after the long journey. Enjoy dinner at your accommodation this evening.
Start the day with a visit to the village of Khamlia, home to Gnaoua musicians. This music, rooted in sub-Saharan traditions brought to Morocco by caravans, combines spiritual rhythms with metal instruments once used to symbolize chains. Enjoy a glass of mint tea and a short concert; it is impossible to stay still as the hypnotic rhythms fill the air.
Next, head to Rissani, a small city that transforms into a lively market on market days. Discover the lively stalls where locals exchange produce, livestock, and various goods. Don’t miss the “donkey parking lot,” which also serves as a sales and repair area, a reminder that donkeys remain a vital mode of transport. Sample the local specialty, Medfouna, also called Berber pizza.
Continue to Erfoud to visit a small fossil museum showcasing Morocco’s rich prehistoric finds. Watch how fossils are carefully extracted and prepared for collectors and institutions, then try spotting some fossils in the wild that are surprisingly easy to find.
In the afternoon, transfer to camels at the edge of the dunes and begin a trek across the sands to your luxury Berber camp. Settle in for dinner, enjoy traditional music, and if the night is clear, gaze at the endless stars overhead. End the day in your comfortable tent, ready for a restful night in the desert.
Wake early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, set your alarm, and grab some coffee. Climb the nearest dune and watch as the morning sun ignites the sand. After breakfast at camp, prepare for the day and take a 4×4 transfer back to the edge of the dunes.
Meet your tour manager and head toward the Dades Valley. Stop first at an ancient irrigation system that once brought water from the distant Saghro Mountains to the desert. Continue to Tinghir and enjoy a guided walk through the palmeraie and the old Jewish quarter, the Mellah. Then visit Todgha Gorge and walk through the most dramatic part of the canyon. Finish the day at your Dades Valley accommodations, where dinner awaits.
Spend the day experiencing local life in the heart of the Rose Valley. After a leisurely breakfast, head to the next valley over. Stop at a local market along the way, then visit a family home. Help prepare lunch or relax, then join the family for a traditional couscous meal.
After lunch, explore more of the valley by car or on foot before returning to your hotel for dinner. For a more active day, choose from several hikes, from a short walk to the unique rock formation called the Monkey Fingers to a full-day trek through the Dades Canyon or across the mountains to the M’Goun River Valley.
After breakfast, set out with your driver along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, winding through the Valley of Roses toward Ouarzazate, Morocco’s “Hollywood.” If time allows, tour a film studio backlot before a short drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou. This iconic ksar has starred in films and TV shows, including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones.
Stop first for a panoramic view of the mud-brick city, then cross the riverbed and climb the steep, winding streets to the granary at the top for breathtaking views of the region. Next, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, reaching nearly 7,500 feet above sea level before descending toward Marrakech. The journey takes most of the day, but there are plenty of stops for tea, photos, and enjoying the sweeping mountain vistas.
Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon and check into your accommodation. Spend the evening exploring on your own, dine at a local restaurant, or dive into the lively chaos of Jemaa el-Fna, where food stalls spring up as the sun sets.
After breakfast, meet your local guide at your riad for a full tour of Marrakech. Visit key landmarks such as the Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and Koutoubia Mosque. Between these sites, explore the souks, where artisans continue centuries-old crafts.
The guided tour ends around lunchtime, leaving the afternoon free to explore at your own pace. In the late afternoon, head to Jemaa el-Fna and find a café overlooking the square to watch it come alive as the sun sets.
After breakfast, travel to the seaside city of Essaouira. Stop along the way at a local argan oil cooperative to see how the oil is produced, and if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of the tree-climbing goats in action. Arrive in Essaouira around lunchtime. Seafood lovers can visit the wharf with a tour manager, select fresh catch, and have it grilled Moroccan-style at a nearby restaurant.
Spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace. Wander the relaxed medina, stroll along the beach (popular with kite-surfers), or sit at a café in the square and watch the world go by. In the evening, catch the best show in town: the sun setting over the ramparts, accompanied by street musicians.
Spend your last full day in Morocco exploring at your own pace. Your tour manager is available if you need suggestions or assistance.
Optionally, take a hands-on cooking class. Begin with a walk through the souks to gather fresh ingredients, then head to the kitchen for a guided cooking session. After preparing the meal, sit down with your host and her family to enjoy the dishes you’ve created.
