A Day in the Life on a Great Lakes Cruise with Victory Cruise Lines

Wondering what a typical day looks like on a small-ship cruise through the Great Lakes? Here's a look at what you can expect as you wake up, dine, explore, and unwind aboard a Victory Cruise Lines ship while sailing between Chicago and Toronto.

Early morning

Your day starts quietly. From 6-8 am, coffee and pastries are waiting in the Compass Lounge for early risers, plus fruit if you want something lighter before your main breakfast. Before breakfast begins, it's the perfect place to grab a coffee from the espresso machine and watch the ship approach the day's destination.

Breakfast follows in two locations, timed around that day's port schedule (usually somewhere between 7-9 am). The Coastal Dining Room, located on deck 1, is reserved for a sit-down menu with a few standard buffet items set out, while the Grill on deck 4 typically opens half an hour later for a full buffet-style grab and go whether you're in a hurry or prefer a slower start to the morning.

Port mornings

At nearly every port, you'll have an included excursion that highlights one of the destination's major attractions. In Cleveland, you might visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, while Detroit is home to the Henry Ford Museum, one of the region's most popular attractions. These excursions typically run in the morning at one or two set times and again in the afternoon, lasting about 2-3 hours. You'll typically have enough time to see the highlights and still return to the ship for lunch.

If you want more in your day, premium excursions run at various times throughout the day, and you'll often have enough time to combine an included excursion with a premium experience without feeling rushed. In ports like Detroit, Port Colborne, Sault Ste. Marie, Mackinac, and Milwaukee, it's especially easy to break off on your own after the included tour and wander on your own. 

Midday

Lunch mirrors breakfast — buffet in the Grill, or a full menu with daily specials in the Coastal Dining Room. After that, the afternoon is yours. Some guests head back to their cabin for a nap, others gather in the lounge for games, a movie, or one of the "Lakelorian" talks (the ship's take on onboard lectures about Great Lakes history and lore). If you've still got energy, this offers a good window of time to explore on your own before the ship's departure from the dock.

Evening

Once you're back onboard and freshened up, the Compass Lounge becomes the local hub before dinner. Here, you’ll hear the excursion director give recaps of the day, a preview of the next day’s plans, light music, and cocktails. 

  

Dinner runs from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Coastal Dining Room, and if you're in the mood for something different, the Tuscan Grill (reservation only - on the 4th deck in The Grill)  lets you cook your own protein at your table on a hot lava stone. The menu only changes once during an 11-day trip, but you are welcome to go as often as you would like!  If it sounds like fun, it's worth trying at least once — and you're welcome to dine there more than once during your voyage.

After dinner, you can head to the Compass Lounge to enjoy the evening's live music from the house band until around 10 p.m. If you want a quieter night with the music as the backdrop, not the main affair, head to the Tavern located in the back of the lounge. Here you can chat with other guests, the bartenders, or watch sports on the TVs behind the bar.

Sea days

On days without a port stop, the pace shifts a bit with an early continental breakfast, a midday brunch buffet extravaganza, and a full slate of activities in the lounge — bingo, trivia, food and cocktail demos, and more Lakelorian storytelling. These are the built-in rest days, and most guests treat them that way.
