Start Planning My Trip
By Julia Kocubinski

Traveling was once something I did with a packed schedule. I maximized my time with long days, moving from place to place, and a constant push to see and do everything. When I found myself sailing to Svalbard on the Plancius with my seven-year-old son on a trip with Adventure Life, I quickly realized this journey would look very different from trips I had taken before becoming a parent.

A Different Pace on an Arctic Family Vacation

Traveling with a younger child requires a fundamental shift in pace and expectations. Before, I gravitated toward maximizing my time away from work, taking long hikes, full days of activities, and adventurous food choices at every meal. With a child, the rhythm slows. I had to compromise on the flight price in order to find the best itinerary that I knew he could handle. I also had to ensure extra downtime before embarking on our cruise to help him adjust to the new time zone. We often took the shorter, more leisurely hikes while I watched the more active hikers summit nearby ridges. Days were structured around energy levels. Sometimes we had to stop for an impromptu snow angel or snowball fight. Early bedtimes replaced late-night conversations. At first, that change felt limiting, and honestly, it can be challenging to let go of the travel style I once loved, but slowing down brings unexpected rewards.

Seeing the Arctic Through a Child’s Eyes

Moving at a child’s pace invites you to notice more. When you’re not racing to the next viewpoint, you linger. You spot wildflowers you would normally cruise right past, notice subtle colors in the ice, watch seabirds longer, and celebrate small discoveries that might otherwise be overlooked. Who knew that Mom getting pooped on by a seabird would be the highlight of the day? A shorter walk can still feel like a big adventure when it’s filled with curiosity and shared wonder.

Traveling with kids also gives you permission to choose simplicity. Kid-friendly activities, like wildlife spotting, Zodiac rides, or listening to expedition guides tell stories, become deeply engaging experiences rather than add-ons. You learn that it’s okay to skip the long hike and still feel fulfilled. Rest is no longer a compromise, but a part of the journey. There’s also something powerful about the routine that comes with younger travelers. Going to bed early means greeting the Arctic morning rested and present. Meals become moments of connection rather than culinary conquest. You might even get to finish a book or two!

Perhaps the most meaningful change is how travel strengthens your bond. Experiencing a place like the Arctic through your child’s eyes reminds you why exploration matters in the first place. Questions come easily. Wonder is constant. The world feels bigger, and at the same time, more personal.

Why an Arctic Expedition for Families Works

Traveling with younger kids means letting go of how you used to travel and accepting something different. It isn’t always easy, and it requires flexibility and patience. But that shift often leads to experiences that feel more deliberate and meaningful, even if they look simpler on the surface.
