Join this 9-day Arctic expedition cruise to Svalbard, the realm of the midnight sun, aboard the M/S Quest. June brings a unique purity to the region, with active bird colonies and snow-capped mountain ranges. The archipelago remains in the grip of winter ice, offering views of changing frozen formations as spring transitions to summer. Your journey begins with a one-night hotel stay in Longyearbyen to prepare for the adventure. You then embark on a seven-night cruise dedicated to exploring the Arctic wilderness. Navigate close to glittering glaciers and remote fjords, allowing for intimate shore landings. Explore the magnificent scenery on foot and scan the landscape for wildlife. The itinerary prioritizes encounters with Arctic fauna, including walruses, seals, and the polar bear.
Highlights
Make landings every day with Zodiac craft as you cruise the High Arctic
Explore countless spectacular fjords and glaciers of immense natural beauty
Receive raucous greetings by the large numbers of nesting seabirds
Search for polar bears and bearded seal on the fjord ice
Activity options vary depending on destination and operator. Activity level is determined by the range and intensity of activities you choose to participate in. Discuss with your Trip Planner which options are best for you.
Explore Longyearbyen independently before joining fellow expedition members and guides for lunch. Board the expedition ship in the afternoon and sail through Isfjorden to begin the Arctic journey. Navigation in this remote region relies entirely on ice and weather patterns. Consequently, the exact itinerary adapts to these conditions and wildlife encounters. Expect daily Zodiac cruises and shore landings whenever opportunities arise. Examples of potential visiting sites include:
Prins Karls Forland
This narrow strip of land is covered by a magnificent and snow-covered mountain chain. The island is also home to many seabirds and harbor seals.
Virgohamna, Danskøya
Danskøya was the starting point for two of the most daring attempts to reach the North Pole. The Swedish explorer Andrée made an attempt with a hydrogen balloon and American journalist Wellman started with an airship. Interesting remnants of these Arctic expeditions can still be seen here.
Fantastic Fjords
Svalbard offers the visitor countless spectacular fjords. During your journey, explore a some of them such as:
Liefdefjorden, meaning “The fjord of love”, is lined with snow-covered mountain peaks and here you hope to cruise along the face of the spectacular Monaco Glacier. Many common eiders and pink-footed geese nest in the area and if you are lucky you may see the rare king eider. In Krossfjorden, you enjoy in the beautifully sculpted front of the 14th of July Glacier and are greeted by the large numbers of kittiwakes and Brünnich’s guillemots nesting on the nearby cliffs. Raudfjorden is an area of immense natural beauty – dominated by magnificent glaciers. It is also a favorite spot of seals and the bird cliffs are abuzz with activity. Kongsfjorden is home to the scientific village of Ny-Ålesund. It was from here that Amundsen and Nobile set out on their heroic expeditions to the North Pole.
Sjuøyane
These islands are situated north of Nordaustlandet and it is Svalbard’s northernmost outpost. On one of the islands, Rossøya, Andrée and his companions had one of their depots with supplies in case their, by now legendary, balloon trip in the late 1800s would fail.
North Spitsbergen
North of Spitsbergen, you may come across the edge of the pack ice. Not many ships venture here and you can marvel at the silence and grandeur of this icy landscape. You keep an eye out for the iconic Arctic wildlife.
Southwest Spitsbergen
The grand fjords of Hornsund offer spectacular glaciers and a breathtaking landscape of towering mountain peaks, often rising above the clouds. On a clear day you can see the summit of the highest mountain, Hornsundtind, at 1431 meters. Hornsund is a favorite haunt of some of Svalbard’s polar bears and bearded seals can often be seen resting on the fjord ice.
Day 9: Disembark in Longyearbyen
1 Breakfast
Arrive in Longyearbyen in the early morning and begin your journey home.
Please note: The itinerary is for guidance only. Your exact route will depend on ice, weather conditions, wildlife, and government regulations. Medical travel insurance — including emergency medical attention and evacuation coverage — is required, with a minimum of EUR/USD 50,000 per person for Arctic trips, EUR/USD 100,000 per person for Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands, and EUR/USD 300,000 per person for the Ross Sea. A comprehensive travel insurance policy should typically meet these requirements.
The trip was terrific with great planning on your part. Most of the adventures were not mainstream and somewhat off the beaten path which made it especially enjoyable!! We felt taken care of and you all were readily available to respond to questions and issues.
