Founded in 1986 by biologist Søren Rasmussen, Albatros Travel is a Scandinavian-born, family-owned tour operator that brings Scandinavian quality to adventures around the world. Inspired by Africa's extraordinary wildlife, spectacular landscapes, and vibrant cultures, the company begins with tented safaris in Kenya before expanding into destinations across Africa, Asia, the Arctic, the Nordics, and beyond. From its headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark, Albatros Travel grows into a global travel group with subsidiaries, hotels, bush camps, bus companies, and expedition cruise ships. Operations expand through Albatros Africa, Albatros Arctic Circle, Albatros Expeditions, and Albatros Adventure Marathons, allowing you to explore iconic wildlife destinations, remote polar regions, and unique adventure events around the world. Throughout its history, Albatros Travel pioneers sustainable tourism and adventure travel. Milestones include developing ecotourism initiatives in Indonesia, supporting forest conservation in Borneo, earning a European Travel Award for sustainable travel, introducing shark diving in South Africa, launching expedition cruises in the polar regions, creating world-renowned marathons such as the Great Wall Marathon, Polar Circle Marathon, Big Five Marathon, and Petra Desert Marathon, and expanding into Greenland, China, India, Poland, and many other destinations. Albatross Travel believes that responsible travel creates lasting benefits for wildlife, local communities, and future generations. Through the Albatros Africa Foundation, established in 2019, you directly support conservation and corporate social responsibility initiatives funded by guest contributions, donations, and partnerships across South Africa.

One of the Foundation's key initiatives is the Albatros Black Rhino Breeding Project, created in partnership with The Rhino Orphanage. The project helps protect the critically endangered Black Rhino by supporting breeding efforts on a private game reserve in Limpopo. Dedicated Rhino Monitors track the animals daily, monitor their health and behavior, and help ensure their long-term safety. Continued monitoring also supports genetic diversity and responsible population management. As of 2026, the original Black Rhino cow has successfully produced three calves over seven years, contributing to the recovery of the species while ethical wildlife guiding ensures minimal disturbance to the animals.

Albatross Travel also supports the Albatros Orphan White Rhino Project, which helps rehabilitate orphaned White Rhinos and return them to the wild. Working with The Rhino Orphanage, the project releases young rhinos into protected reserves where they gradually adapt to life in their natural habitat. Full-time Rhino Monitors oversee the population every day, ensuring the animals remain healthy, safe, and well adapted. Behavioral research guides future rewilding efforts and helps determine the best environments for successful releases.

By 2026, many of the rewilded White Rhinos have become mothers and fathers, demonstrating the long-term success of the rehabilitation program and contributing to the recovery of rhino populations despite ongoing poaching threats. Your support helps fund rhino conservation, scientific research, and the daily care provided by The Rhino Orphanage, including veterinary treatment and nutrition for orphaned calves.

Albatross Travel continues to strengthen its conservation efforts by improving wildlife monitoring through new technologies, protecting endangered rhinos from poaching, and expanding knowledge of rhino biology and behavior.
