Plan My Trip

Story, Mission and Vision

White Desert began with a simple but radical idea: that Antarctica — a place long reserved for scientists and extreme explorers — could be experienced in a way that was both deeply respectful of the environment and entirely unlike traditional polar travel. The company’s origins trace back to years of expeditionary work in some of the continent’s most remote regions, where the promise of sharing this extraordinary landscape with others first took shape.

What started as a small, ambitious venture operating from just a handful of tents has grown into a world-leading Antarctic enterprise that welcomes guests into the interior while supporting scientific research and protecting the fragile environment that makes the continent so unique. From the outset, the mission was clear: to open the door to Antarctica responsibly, blending logistical precision with a level of comfort previously unheard of on the ice.

Responsible Travel

Environmental Governance in Antarctica

With two decades of experience in Antarctica, White Desert understands what it takes to operate responsibly in one of the world’s most fragile environments. Antarctica is unique in that there are no nations here, and its protection is governed entirely by international agreements that prioritise peace, science, and conservation.

Environmental Impact and Monitoring

White Desert has been recognised for its leadership in environmental protection, including awards for the Initial Environmental Evaluation (IEE), which clearly demonstrates how the operations maintain less than a minor or transitory environmental impact. White Desert camps are fully temporary and designed to leave no trace, while every activity follows strict mitigation measures.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

In 2021, White Desert became the first Antarctic operator to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel, a major step in reducing the carbon footprint of aviation in Antarctica. SAF is produced from waste oils rather than crops, offering a carbon reduction of up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

Current blends of SAF provide a 24-40% reduction in emissions, while also producing less soot and sulfur — critical for maintaining air quality over the Continent. In future seasons, White Desert plans to use SAF for all Antarctic flights, supporting the science-based targets and commitment to the Pledge to Net Zero.

Carbon Offsetting

Residual carbon emissions that cannot be avoided are offset through internationally recognised programs. White Desert has been Carbon Neutral® certified since 2007 and has contributed to the Global Renewable Energy Portfolio since 2020.

White Desert has offset all remaining emissions by providing finance to emissions-reduction projects, supporting the transition to a low-carbon global economy.

Leadership in Antarctic Sustainability

White Desert continues to set the standard for environmental stewardship in Antarctica. White Desert innovates with renewable energy, such as relying heavily on solar panels, implementing strict environmental management plans, influencing policy through leadership roles, and publishing annual Environmental and Sustainability Reports.

By combining luxury travel with rigorous sustainability practices, White Desert offers its guests the chance to explore Antarctica responsibly, leaving the Continent inspired to protect its extraordinary beauty for future generations.

  • Carbon Neutral: White Desert was the first aviation operator in Antarctica to be entirely Carbon Neutral, a standard the company has maintained since 2007. Your entire trip with White Desert is fully offset.
  • Waste Management: White Desert repackages all consumables before bringing them to Antarctica. At season’s end, all solid waste is shipped back to South Africa, with 75% being recycled.
  • Foundation: The White Desert Foundation is committed to tackling climate change through supporting scientific research in Antarctica & investing in cutting-edge Blue Carbon initiatives in South Africa.

The White Desert Foundation

White Desert's unrivalled access to the Antarctic interior carries with it a responsibility they take seriously. The White Desert Foundation was established to convert that access into lasting impact — funding pioneering climate science, restoring Blue Carbon ecosystems, and building the global awareness that a Continent this consequential demands.

Through the Foundation, innovation moves from hypothesis to action. Research that would otherwise remain unreachable finds its footing on the ice. Fragile coastal habitats are rehabilitated. And the story of Antarctica — urgent, extraordinary and essential — reaches audiences who have the capacity to act on it.

Every White Desert guest contributes to the Foundation through an Environmental Levy. White Desert is grateful for that trust and takes great care to ensure that every dollar is deployed with precision and purpose.

Supporting Antarctic Science
White Desert provides logistical and operational grants to scientists conducting field research in Antarctica — helping unlock critical insights into the rapidly changing polar environment and its global implications. Climate scientists not backed by national programmes often lack the resources to work here at all. That is precisely where the Foundation steps in.
White Desert grants provide transportation aboard White Desert aircraft, field equipment, expedition guides, and communications infrastructure — the logistical scaffolding that makes independent Antarctic research viable.
Among those they have supported are teams studying microbial life on meteorites preserved in the ice, and glaciologists studying melt and refreeze within the snowpack to better understand East Antarctica's Ice Mass balance.

Investing in Blue Carbon restoration
White Desert invests in Blue Carbon projects that rehabilitate coastal habitats — restoring the ecosystem functions and carbon sequestration capacity that degraded wetlands have lost. These environments, when healthy, sequester carbon at a rate that dwarfs the capacity of terrestrial rainforests. The science is increasingly compelling.
White Desert's current projects focus on degraded Salt Marshes and Peat Wetlands along the Western Cape coastline of South Africa — the gateway to Antarctica. Restoring these systems creates a direct line between the place its guests depart from and the broader mission of protecting the planet's most critical carbon stores.
Emerging science suggests these habitats may be among nature's most powerful tools for climate mitigation. White Desert is investing in them now, while that case is still being made.

Education and Awareness
White Desert creates opportunities for deeper understanding by connecting audiences with Antarctica's history, geography and current scientific research. Through immersive educational experiences, White Desert illuminates how the Continent is changing — and why what happens here resonates far beyond the ice.
The people who come to Antarctica through White Desert leave changed. Many return to positions of influence — in government, business, philanthropy and public life. The Foundation's awareness programme is designed with that in mind: to give guests, and those they reach, the scientific literacy to carry the Continent's story forward with authority.
White Desert makes Antarctica's urgency legible to people who have the capacity to act on it.
