Story

The story begins with a search for emptier mountains. In the late 1990s, Christian Begin, Beat Steiner, and Peter "The Swede" Mattsson work in the outdoor ski-filmmaking scene around Whistler, competing with a revolving door of film crews for the same accessible terrain. Determined to find something wilder, Peter "The Swede" Mattsson scouts Bella Coola and discovers towering peaks, impressive vertical, and a deep, stable coastal snowpack.

A partnership with a unique 1920s hunting-and-fishing lodge, which sits empty each winter, marks the beginning of the journey. Bella Coola Heli Sports is founded in 2003, just as the freeski revolution takes off, attracting the world's leading snow-sport photographers to terrain that rivals Alaska. That historic lodge becomes Tweedsmuir Park Lodge, the heart of a basecamp that now includes four additional destinations across the Coast Range.

The recognition follows, but Bella Coola Heli Sports continues pushing forward, refining every experience and exploring new possibilities.

That responsibility takes real form. Every Bella Coola Heli Sports adventure contributes 2% to the Legacy Fund, supporting community, conservation, and climate initiatives across the valley. In 2019, Bella Coola Heli Sports becomes the world's first climate-positive heli-skiing operation, offsetting more carbon than it emits through verified projects that protect British Columbia's vulnerable old-growth forests.

Bella Coola Heli Sports also operates with deep respect for the people of this place. Operating on the unceded territories of eight First Nations, Bella Coola Heli Sports treats its evolving relationships with Indigenous communities as an ongoing commitment to learning and collaboration rather than a footnote.
