Story
Within The Wild is a curated collection of two Dixon family-owned Alaska properties—Tutka Bay Lodge and Danish Daughter Farm—along with Alaska Beyond, a bespoke concierge service that helps you explore Alaska's rugged wilderness, traditions, history, and culture. Located along the breathtaking Kachemak Bay near Homer, Within The Wild transforms more than 40 years of life in Alaska's backcountry into authentic, luxury wilderness experiences.
Founded on Carl and Kirsten Dixon's vision of living close to the natural world, Within The Wild welcomes you into a way of life shaped by Alaska's landscapes. Since 1982, the Dixon family continues to draw inspiration from the wilderness while sharing meaningful adventures rooted in hospitality, nature, and local culture.
The journey begins in Alaska's remote interior, where Carl and Kirsten leave medical careers to build an off-grid life along the Yentna River and open Riversong Lodge. Exceptional fishing, thoughtful hospitality, and Kirsten's seasonal cuisine establish the foundation for a lifetime of welcoming guests. In 1995, the family transforms a former hunting camp into Winterlake Lodge, where dog sledding, glacier travel, river adventures, wild salmon, foraged foods, and homegrown produce reflect a deep connection to the land.
In 2009, the family begins a new chapter by purchasing Tutka Bay Lodge near Homer. Surrounded by seaside coves, lush forests, and temperate rainforest, the lodge offers the perfect balance of luxury, adventure, and reflection. The family's connection to Homer continues to grow through community initiatives and, in 2023, the establishment of Danish Daughter Farm, a forty-acre flower farm overlooking Kachemak Bay that celebrates Alaska's homesteading heritage and natural beauty.
Throughout every experience, Within The Wild honors Alaska's extraordinary abundance while protecting the landscapes that make every journey unforgettable. Conservation shapes daily operations, following the natural rhythm of the seasons through a regenerative approach that allows the land to guide every decision. Through the nonprofit Be the Wild, Within The Wild helps safeguard old-growth forests, coastal ecosystems, and the archaeological sites of Tutka Bay for future generations.

The Dixon family recognizes a deep responsibility to care for the land that sustains Alaska. Through partnerships and accountability, Tutka Bay Lodge supports the protection of natural heritage, preservation of cultural heritage, support for local communities, and environmentally friendly practices. Sustainable policies and procedures protect the wildlife, flora, and fauna of Tutka Bay while preserving the area's unspoiled beauty for both local communities and future visitors. Within The Wild works closely with local communities to support their interests, minimize environmental impacts, and ensure activities do not disrupt surrounding ecosystems. Conservation efforts also follow environmental guidelines established by state and federal agencies and are strengthened through the company's nonprofit initiative, Be the Wild.
Sustainability extends throughout the kitchen. Non-perishable ingredients such as rice, beans, flour, and grains are purchased in bulk to reduce packaging waste and stored in airtight reusable containers for longer shelf life. Whenever possible, fresh produce comes from local farmers who deliver products in returnable boxes or reusable totes that are returned for refilling. Only Alaska-caught fish is served, while beef and other proteins are sourced from local farms or small West Coast producers whenever available. Single-use plastics are avoided except where durable garbage bags are required for safe waste transport. Kitchen food waste is carefully monitored, weighed, and delivered to local farmers for composting and animal feed. Used cooking oil, spent batteries, and rechargeable batteries are responsibly recycled through reclamation centers, while reusable kitchen towels and environmentally friendly hydrogen peroxide cleaning solutions further reduce waste.
Tutka Bay Lodge strengthens sustainability by working closely with the local community. Water is collected from a nearby spring and stored for seasonal use. Food scraps are composted or delivered to local farmers, while vegetables and greens are sourced from The Danish Daughter farm and other nearby growers. Off-grid sewer and water systems reduce environmental impacts, seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs are preserved for future use, and natural materials such as stone and logs are used to build furniture and cabin features. Within The Wild is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by using sustainable energy sources, including solar panels, wind turbines, biodiesel generators, and wood stoves for heating. Ongoing efforts to become a zero-waste facility include composting food waste and continuously improving sustainable operations.
Across every property, Within The Wild continues to reduce environmental impacts through thoughtful everyday practices. Ingredients are sourced from both cultivated gardens and Alaska's natural landscapes whenever possible, fair-trade coffee is served, and high-tunnel greenhouses produce organic harvests supported by rainwater collection systems. Energy-efficient LED lighting replaces older incandescent and fluorescent bulbs throughout the properties. Sustainability practices are documented annually through the Weeva program, allowing Within The Wild to measure progress, establish benchmarks, and continually improve environmental performance in future seasons.
