Story
The Manta Resort grows from a vision to safeguard the future of Pemba Island through responsible tourism, conservation, and community partnership. What begins as a small tourism project develops into a lasting commitment shared by guardians, colleagues, neighbors, and local communities who care deeply about the island and its future. From the very beginning, the purpose extends beyond creating an exceptional resort experience. Every visit celebrates Pemba's rich culture, thriving coral reefs, and protected forests while helping preserve the island's unique natural and cultural heritage.
Since 2007, this vision continues to take shape through meaningful initiatives, including the Kwanini Marine Protected Area, improved water access, and education partnerships. Each project demonstrates that lasting progress grows through patience, trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to protecting both people and nature.
Mission
The Manta Resort creates meaningful travel experiences that connect you with the people, culture, and natural beauty of Pemba Island while supporting conservation and community development. Through the Kwanini Foundation, community-led initiatives, and partnerships with local and international organizations, every stay helps protect reefs and forests, improve local livelihoods, and preserve the island for future generations.
Vision
The Manta Resort envisions a future where tourism, conservation, and local communities thrive together. Hosting and guardianship remain inseparable, allowing every guest to become part of an ongoing story that protects Pemba Island's rare ecosystems, empowers local communities, and preserves its cultural and natural heritage. Every experience reflects a shared belief that the island's unique character deserves to endure for generations to come.
The Manta Resort believes that responsible tourism begins with asking "Why?" (Kwanini?). Every decision focuses on empowering the people of Pemba Island to build sustainable and resilient communities through education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and marine protection while preserving the island's unique culture and natural heritage.
The Kwanini Foundation, working closely with The Manta Resort, supports community-led projects requested by local residents. These initiatives strengthen local communities and create long-term social and environmental benefits across Pemba Island.
Marine conservation remains at the heart of The Manta Resort's sustainability efforts. Pemba's coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangroves support exceptional biodiversity and provide essential livelihoods for local communities. Tourism helps protect these fragile ecosystems by supporting conservation initiatives that address overfishing, habitat degradation, climate change, and plastic pollution.
In partnership with local communities and the government, The Manta Resort helped establish the Kwanini Marine Conservation Area (KMCA), a one-kilometer no-take marine reserve where all forms of fishing are prohibited. This protected area has contributed to significant increases in fish populations while demonstrating the value of community-led marine conservation. The long-term goal is to expand similar protected areas along Pemba's coastline in cooperation with local communities, government authorities, and tourism partners.
Through the Snorkelling for Conservation program, you directly contribute to marine protection. Snorkeling fees help fund ranger services, 24-hour monitoring, and surveillance of the marine reserve, while additional donations support community development projects managed by the Kwanini Foundation. Tourism also helps expand this conservation model to other important marine habitats around Pemba.
The Manta Resort also supports the conservation of Pemba's unique terrestrial ecosystems. The island's ancient forests, including the Ngezi Forest Reserve, protect rare and endemic plants and wildlife found nowhere else in the world. These forests provide habitat for species such as the Pemba Flying Fox, Pemba Scops Owl, Pemba Vervet Monkey, Zanzibar Colobus Monkey, and Pemba Blue Duiker.
By visiting The Manta Resort, you help support the protection of Pemba's forests, coral reefs, wildlife, and local communities. Responsible tourism helps preserve the island's natural and cultural heritage while creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.
