Day 1: Drive to Songpan

  • 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Meet up with your guide in Chengdu this morning. Tsering, your guide for the trip, will be taking you to the village where she grew up and into her home. Her family will proudly introduce you to the Amdo Tibetan culture and their mountain village way of life.

After a drive of only one hour outside of Chengdu, you begin to enter the mountains that approach the Tibetan Plateau. The drive follows a canyon through the towns of Wenchuan and Maoxian where you see evidence of the 2008 earthquake in this region. Enjoy lunch in the highland town of Songpan, which has a Tibetan-style feel similar to that of America's old wild west towns. After lunch, take a half hour drive to nearby Muni Valley and settle in to the comfort of Tibetan hospitality. Enjoy the remote beauty and explore the trails around the village and on the ridges this afternoon.

Total Driving Distance: 280 km/175 miles

Day 2: Drive to Tiewu Village

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Today continue further up in the Tibetan Plateau and into the grasslands of Ruoergai, which supports the nomadic lifestyle. See the herds of sheep, goats, and yak spread out over miles of grasslands along with their respective nomadic herders keeping watch. Enjoy lunch at the grassland outpost of Ruoergai before continuing on to reach the valley of Tiewu and the hospitality of Tsering's family by dinnertime.

Total Driving Distance: 320km/200 miles

Day 3: Tiewu Village

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Enjoy your first day encountering the local culture of the village with Tsering. See the local women hard at work in the fields. Take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding pine forests and mountains and keep your eyes peeled for the deer that live in abundance in these valleys. Tsering will introduce you to the local culture as you tour the village and see the local women. After lunch, a short hike to a nearby peak offers sweeping views of the entire valley. Rest in the afternoon before helping to make Tibetan momos for this evening. Momos are a traditional meal and are meat, vegetable, or potato filling that is wrapped in a dough on the outside. Enjoy dinner with Tsering and her family.

Day 4: Draga-na Gorge Hike

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Today you can opt to take a short hike to a stunning gorge in the adjacent valley. Drive one hour by Tibetan villages along the route to the mouth of the gorge in a large alpine valley. Summertime in the valley is reminiscent of parts of Switzerland. Not for the faint of heart, the steady and sometimes steep hike requires climbing up for about two hours to fully appreciate the views offered from the upper reaches of the canyon at about 9,800 ft. Pass by a cascading stream with many small waterfalls on your way. Enjoy your picnic lunch and head back towards Tiewu. Those interested in a less ambitious hike may trek along the surrounding valley which offers beautiful walks, including one to an alpine lake.

This evening enjoy a short introduction to Tibetan cooking for those interested in learning about the local cuisine in the region. Traditional yak butter tea is also available for those with an adventurous spirit and a strong stomach!

Day 5: Langmusi Village

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
This morning set out for an hour and a half to the nearby tourist town of Langmusi. The Bailong River forms a border between Sichuan and Gansu and separates the town and valley into north and south. The Buddhist monasteries line each side of the valley and offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and forests. This town has a diverse mix of three cultures: Han Chinese, Tibetan, and Hui, and the presence of a Muslim community affords guests the opportunity to enjoy Muslim-style noodles this evening. Overnight in town this evening.

Total Driving Distance: 80 km/50 miles

Day 6: Return Chengdu

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Start your long drive back today towards Chengdu. As you descend along the many mountain switchbacks, you are reminded why the Tibetan communities are so isolated from the rest of the world. Lunch is provided en route and a farewell dinner is planned back in Chengdu near the Jinli Ancient street. Continue on to your next destination or overnight in Chengdu this evening.

Total Driving Distance: 520km/325 miles. Approximately 8-9 hours.

An optional flight may be arranged from Jiuzhaigou to reduce the drive time by 4 hours.
