International
travel with children can be both exciting and daunting. A smooth trip requires careful planning that balances entry requirements, logistics, and creates a fun, safe experience for the kids.
Passports and Travel Documents for Children
Before booking your trip or flights, check passports for every family member. Children, even infants, need their own passports. Many countries also require a passport to be valid at least six months beyond the travel dates. If one parent is traveling alone with a child, some countries require a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent to prevent custody disputes or child abduction concerns. It’s also advisable to carry copies of birth certificates and travel insurance that covers medical care abroad. Make sure to have multiple copies of all documents in case any are lost (for example, keep one in your carry-on and one in your checked bag), and keep a copy of each at home with someone who can help if you need access to the documents.
Packing Smart for International Travel with Children
When traveling with kids, plan to pack a little extra for all the “just-in-case” scenarios. Food abroad can be very different from what your child is used to, and some kids may be hesitant to try unfamiliar flavors. While it’s great to encourage them to try local dishes, having a stash of familiar snacks can make travel much smoother, especially during long flights, busy sightseeing days, or when options are limited. Pack lightweight, non-perishable foods like granola bars, crackers, or fruit pouches to provide comfort and consistency. Before the trip, prepare your kids by talking about the kinds of foods they might encounter and framing it as an adventure, while reassuring them that their favorite snacks will be available if needed. Have them help shop for fun snacks to bring on the plane and consider keeping a favorite snack hidden to pull out when you feel they need a little pick-me-up.
Health and Safety Tips for Traveling Abroad with Children
It's best to bring your child’s medicine from home, even for common needs like pain relief, allergies, or motion sickness. Brands and dosages may differ in other countries, and instructions might not be in English. Pack medications in their original containers, along with a copy of prescriptions if applicable, and keep them in your carry-on to ensure quick access during travel. Do a little research to know what the medical system is like where you are traveling, and even where the nearest medical facilities will be on your journey. This preparation saves stress and ensures your child gets exactly what they need if they start feeling unwell. Additionally, safety is a top priority. Teach kids your phone number, hotel name, or how to identify staff or security in case they get separated. Bright clothing or ID bracelets can help with visibility. Establish family meeting points in busy areas.
Keeping Kids Engaged During International Travel
Depending on the age of your kids or their interests, consider bringing a few small books, games, coloring supplies, and toys, or download some favorite shows that can entertain them during long flights or transfers, or during downtime. Have the kids help in the planning process, considering their input when planning activities. Plan your itinerary with shorter excursions that are fun for people of all ages, with breaks to simply play or relax in between. You know your kids better than anyone, so you know what they are capable of and interested in.
Making the Journey Meaningful
Travel can be enjoyable for the whole family. Introducing kids to the local culture through foods, simple phrases, or traditions can turn any trip into a fun learning adventure. International travel with kids takes extra effort, but with the right preparation, it can be a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family.
