The long dry season falls roughly June to September and the short dry season December to February. These are the most popular and most comfortable months to travel: trails are firmer, roads are easier, and animals concentrate around shrinking water sources. The long rains come March to May and the short rains October to November. Rain usually arrives as afternoon downpours rather than all-day washouts, and the trade-off is dramatic green scenery, fewer travelers, lower lodge rates, and excellent birding.
If you are weighing the wetter months, there is a clear split. Skip the long rains of March to May, when Bwindi's trails turn to deep mud and gorilla tracking becomes a real slog. The short rains of October and November are a different story and can be a surprisingly good time to go. Most travelers do the standard one-hour gorilla visit and are back by early afternoon, ahead of the heaviest showers, so a little rain rarely derails the day. One trade-off worth knowing: when it is wet, the gorillas tend to hunker down and stay put, so if you want them active rather than sleepy, lean toward the dry months.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga runs all year, because the gorilla families are tracked daily regardless of season. The drier months, June to September and December to February, make the steep, muddy forest trails more manageable and are the most requested, so permits for those dates sell out months ahead. Trekking in the wet season means muddier, more demanding hikes, but fewer people on the trail and easier permit availability. Whenever you go, expect a strenuous hike and pack for rain at any time of year.
