Old Mondoro

Old Mondoro is owned and operated by the Cumings family, who founded its sister property, Chiawa Camp. The name means "lion" in the Goba language and refers to a mythical white lion said to have lived in the area. The camp is set under winterthorn trees between the Zambezi River and a hyacinth-filled channel that runs through camp. There are no fences, and elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, and baboons regularly move between the chalets. The camp has no Wi-Fi or cell reception. The park covers more than 4,092 sq km (1,580 sq mi) and is known for leopard sightings and high hippo concentrations. Fresh produce comes from Zambezi Harvest, a village farming cooperative on the riverbank, and the camp holds a Climate Positive certification.

Rooms & Suites
The chalets are open-design structures built from natural materials. Each faces either the Zambezi River or the channel through camp and has a private deck with seating. Roll-down blinds give privacy, and fans provide cooling since there is no air conditioning. Bathrooms combine an inside flush toilet and washbasin with an open-air shower and an outdoor bath that doubles as a plunge pool. The chalets have no Wi-Fi or cell reception.

Amenities & Facilities
Meals are served in an open-sided sitenje (dining area) overlooking the Zambezi River, with a fireplace where guests gather in the early morning and evening. Breakfast is served before the morning activity. Lunch is family-style, and dinner is plated and served outdoors by the fire. The in-house chefs adjust menus for dietary requirements, including gluten-free and dairy-free meals. The camp has no swimming pool, and the outdoor chalet baths are used as plunge pools instead.
