Have you ever wondered if hippos talk underwater? If ants talk at all? Why elephant shrews tap dance? Why birds sing at dawn?
Using specialized sound equipment, eavesdrop on the wild and hear what mammals, birds, insects, and other animals have to say.
The safari starts after lunch with a fascinating talk on the world of sound — including how and why the big cats roar, birds sing, and insects chatter. Learn about infrasonic elephant rumbles and underwater conversations by hippos, fish, and others, as well as non-vocal sounds by mammals and birds. The session ends with tips on recording wildlife sounds using basic equipment, including smartphones. Then head out on an afternoon game drive to listen to nature’s orchestra through individual headphones. As night falls, tune in to the nocturnal soundscape before returning to camp. Begin early the next morning with a drive to catch the dawn chorus, stopping along the way to listen to the many voices of the wild before returning to camp for breakfast.

WILDLIFE AT ITS BEST
Each morning and late afternoon, an experienced professional guide and tracker take participants on safari game drives through thick bush and open plains in search of the Big Five—elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, and leopard—as well as a variety of birds and other species such as giraffe, zebra, warthog, kudu, and impala. Sundowners are served with tasty snacks while watching the sun set over the African bush. During the drives, the focus is on sharing information about everything encountered—whether the interest lies in birding, insects, plants, or trees, guides are always eager to share their knowledge. They also highlight the smaller, often overlooked but equally important aspects of the bush. Driving 5 kilometers alongside the Olifants River often reveals hippos, crocodiles, and a wide range of birdlife, including the occasional and very special sighting of the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl.
