Tena Tena Camp is the flagship camp of Robin Pope Safaris. It sits on a double-tiered bank of the Luangwa River beneath a grove of mahogany trees, between the river and an adjoining lagoon system. The name translates as "temporary home." The camp is in the Nsefu Sector, an exclusive area of South Luangwa National Park. Wildlife here includes elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, and leopard, along with three endemic herbivores: Crawshay's zebra, Thornicroft's giraffe, and Cookson's wildebeest. More than 450 bird species are recorded in the region. The camp is open each season from 22 May to 31 October and runs on solar power with a backup generator. The village and school visits offered from camp support the local Kawaza community.
Tents
The camp has eight safari tents, one double and seven twins, for a maximum of 16 guests. The tents are spaced well apart for privacy, and each one faces the river. Every tent has a verandah with a sitting area and an Evening Breeze air conditioning unit, which cools the air inside the mosquito net only. The sockets take three-pin square plugs, and adapters are provided. Each tent has an enclosed en-suite bathroom and an outdoor shower that is open to the elements and overlooks the river.
Amenities & Facilities
The main area has a dining area and a bar. All meals and drinks are included in the stay, but the source doesn't describe the cuisine style. A permanent viewing hide in camp lets guests watch wildlife at close range, and a seasonal hippo hide operates from late August to October. Wi-Fi is limited and available in the main area only, and there is no cellphone reception. Laundry service is provided. The camp welcomes children aged 12 and over and cannot guarantee a completely nut-free environment for guests with severe nut allergies.
