Involves minimal physical effort and is typically associated with leisurely activities. Activities are low-intensity or last less than a few hours each day.
You are met at the airport and comfortably transported 2 hours by road to the town of Nauta. Embark your modern and newly built river boat, the Cattleya Journey. Take some time to settle in, relax, and have a drink as you get to know your fellow passengers. Savor the first of many authentic freshly prepared dinners by your talented chef as you begin your journey along the Amazon!.
Along the black-water of Belluda-Caño Creek / Dorado River, explore a small tributary of the Ucayali River looking for a variety of primates, colorful and unusual birds, and a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and rainforest plants. Your wildlife sightings and experiences swell as you continue up river into the Pacaya-Samiria reserve, the largest wetland reserve in the world and home to over 500 species of birds, over 130 species of reptiles and amphibians, and hundreds of mammals and primates. Have your binoculars and cameras on hand as your guides expertly identify creatures difficult to spot with an untrained eye.
Day 3: Sapote River | Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
Venturing deep into the rainforest, spend the entire day wandering through the island mazes and twisted tunnels of the the igapo (seasonally flooded forest). Here, the dense plant life is dramatically different than what you see from the river’s edge and harbors a whole new variety of exotic wildlife. As water levels allow, hike through the reserve for close-up viewing and discovery lead by your expert and knowledgeable guides. Examine and learn first-hand about the jungle plants, their unique survival tactics as they compete for sun and nutrients in the dense rainforest, the part they play in sustaining the complex balance of life in the jungle, and the important medicinal value they offer.
After an early breakfast, further explore the vast wetlands of the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. In the afternoon, visit a village along the river for a chance to meet and learn about the lives of the Ribereño people who call the river’s edge their home. It is an excellent opportunity to ask questions (practice your Spanish if you like!) and gain a deeper understanding of how people live in this remote part of the world.
Day 5: Marañón River | Disembark
1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch
In the morning, slowly meander up-river toward the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali Rivers, famous for marking the beginning of the mighty Amazon River. Observe small villages that dot the river’s edge and catch a glimpse of the locals’ activities as they go about their day. As you turn into the Ucayali River, the famous freshwater gray river dolphins and Amazon pink dolphins frequently swim near the boat. Board your sturdy excursion boat to explore the channels that weave through island mazes so you can get a closer look at the wildlife that abounds such as monkeys, sloths, frogs, and an amazing variety of marsh birds.

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
