Unlike many alpine regions dominated by forests or glaciers, the Dolomites combine dramatic rock formations, wide alpine meadows, wildflowers, and impossibly clear mountain lakes.
It is no surprise that the region has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — but the scenery is only part of the story.
The Dolomites are also a fascinating cultural crossroads. Although they are located in Italy, much of the region — particularly South Tyrol — carries a strong Austrian influence. In the surrounding valleys, you may also hear Ladin, an ancient Rhaeto-Romance language that has survived for centuries.
