Day 1: Vientiane | Pak Lay | Embark | Pha liep

In the morning, Heritage Line greets you with a warm welcome and provides an individual hotel pickup for a comfortable minivan transfer to the vessel moored at Pak Lay. You arrive around lunchtime and step aboard the Heritage Line Anouvong, where the team assists with check-in and handles your luggage. Once everything is set, the captain begins the voyage along the scenic Upper Mekong. After lunch, take time to explore the ship and enjoy the passing river views. In the afternoon, the guide delivers an engaging talk about Lao royalty, focusing on King Anouvong, the ship’s namesake. As the sun sets, head to the terrace deck for a cocktail reception to celebrate the start of your journey. Later, enjoy dinner followed by a classic movie in the lounge before retiring to your cabin for a restful first night onboard.

Day 2: Pha Liep | Don Saynhan

At the start of the day, you visit the village of Pha Liep, surrounded by limestone mountains that create a beautiful setting. This small Lao Loum community mainly depends on agriculture, but you will also see two local industries. First, observe how traditional longtail boats are built by hand, an important skill for river life in Laos. Then, visit a small whiskey distillery to see how local rice whiskey is made, a popular drink found in almost every home. You may also try a “Laotian whiskey cola,” a local twist on a classic mix.

In the afternoon, the ship continues to Don Saynhan. From there, take a short Tuk Tuk ride through green landscapes to explore Khao Cave. Inside, you can see natural rock formations and a long-standing bat colony that provides fertilizer for the village’s agriculture.

The ship stays here overnight. Before dinner, enjoy snacks at the bar as the guide shares information about the next day. Spend the evening relaxing on deck or enjoy a reflexology session before resting for the night onboard.

Day 3: Don Saynhan | Pak Yan | Xayaburi

Begin your day with a refreshing session of yoga and leisure, setting the tone for a relaxing morning.

You disembark for another excursion at Pak Yan, a charming village where Hmong, Lao, and Khmu people live together, reflecting a rich blend of cultures and traditions. Many Hmong families resettled here after the 1993 repatriation program, returning from Thailand to rebuild their lives in this close-knit community. The elevated vantage point of the village offers splendid views of the meandering Mekong, providing ample opportunities to capture superb photos.

Returning to the vessel, as you cruise northbound towards the nation's famous first dam and hydroelectric power plant later in the day, your knowledgeable guide shares fascinating insights into the pivotal role of energy production in Laos' economy. Discover its potential to become the 'battery' of Southeast Asia during an engaging evening discussion. The following morning, the journey brings you up close to this significant structure as you pass through the huge water gate.

The ship takes its mooring position near the dam to be ready for the next day’s early passage. After dinner, join a cosy screening of "The Rocket", a 90-minute Lao film about a boy seeking redemption in a land scarred by war.

Day 4: Xayaburi | Hatsok | Moeung Kai

As the morning unfolds, this journey takes you past the dam, with a bit of sailing upstream before you approach the lock. During this time, guests are invited to a brief guided visit to the wheelhouse. Here, the captain unveils the intricacies of his instruments, offering insights into the challenges of navigating this dynamic river and piloting through the water gate. Leaving the gate behind, this sailing day is dedicated to pampering and relaxation for mind and body. Become one with the therapeutic Mekong for a bit, and be assured the team fulfils their role as your gracious hosts for the day. The morning program brings some culinary indulgence as you’re invited to join a cooking class where you’ll learn a Lao-Thai dish simple enough to recreate at home later. Food brings back memories, doesn’t it?

The morning program extends to the deck or lounge, presenting guests with a comprehensive introduction to Laotian and Asian culinary delights. Discover exotic fruits, unique vegetables, special herbs, and distinctive spices that grace the kitchens of Laos and Asia. Guests are encouraged to indulge their taste buds with likely unfamiliar or unseen food. At the same time, the bar opens its doors, enticing guests with an assortment of special fruit smoothies, allowing to savor some of the locally popular, yet undiscovered, concoctions.

After a delightful lunch and maybe some soothing siesta in your stateroom, you take a leisurely stroll through the small village of Ban Hatsok, where your guide highlights seasonal fruits, vegetables, and local crops like corn and tapioca. Climbing the steps to a serene pagoda, you have the chance to engage with monk for a deeper glimpse into the spiritual life of the community.

Upon arriving in the later afternoon, seize the opportunity for a leisurely stroll through downtown Luang Prabang, capturing the magical hues of the sunset. Afterward, you may continue exploring the town, including a visit to the vibrant Night Market.

Day 7: Luang Prabang | Pak Ou | Khok Phou

Before the sun is fully risen, witness the spiritual Buddhist tradition of the morning alms round, known as “Tak Bat” in Lao. Wake before dawn to observe hundreds of saffron-robed monks in a serene procession—a tradition deeply rooted in Lao culture. Bid farewell to Luang Prabang as you continue your upstream cruise on the Mekong River heading towards the renowned Pak Ou Caves, your expert guide presents an engaging lecture on the intricate tapestry of Laos' diverse ethnic groups along the Mekong River. Over the next few days, you'll immerse yourself in the fascinating array of cultural lifestyles, characteristics, and traditions.

Arriving at the Pak Ou Caves, nestled along the rocky shore of the Mekong. There are two grottoes sheltering approximately 4,000 sacred Buddhist statues and images. You delve into the lower cave, the most impressive and easily accessible. Post-cave visit, Heritage Line offers two optional choices to enhance your excursion: an adventurous kayak tour along the serene Nam Ou River or a visit of the nearby village of Ban Muang Keo, known for traditional silk weaving. You also have the opportunity to visit a local alcohol workshop in this village (depending on time and availability).

As the afternoon progresses, you reach the mooring location for the night and explore the 200-year-old village of Ban Khok Phou. Primarily inhabited by the Lao ethnicity, many villagers engage in mountain farming. Gain insight into their practices and witness the collection and processing of agricultural products. The highlight is the traditional Baci ceremony, a heartfelt Laotian ritual led by local elders, bestowing blessings upon your journey. If time permits, you may ascend to a small temple, offering moments of quiet meditation with the local monk and novices.

The evening begins with a welcome cocktail on the sandbank, followed by a barbecue dinner amid astonishing natural beauty. Welcome to a memorable exploration of Laotian culture along the Mekong.

Day 8: Khok Phou | Khok Luang | Khok Aek

For those who rise with the sun, the everyday morning yoga class on the terrace deck with a stunning Mekong backdrop is a great start to the day.

The ship departs as early as possible. Enjoy your breakfast watching the morning life and nature along the river passing by. Your morning sojourn leads you to a picturesque village inhabited by Khmu people. Simplicity defines this locale, with bamboo huts elevated on stilts amidst vast rice fields. In this serene setting, you can mingle and meet with different generations – old and young – in the village, both deeply rooted in the land, sustaining their livelihood through manual agriculture. The sailing time into the mid-afternoon offers again a breath-taking riverine cinema. You arrive at another village which has a very interesting character to it. In this place, three distinct ethnic groups - Hmong, Lao Loum, and Khamo – live together almost under “one roof”. Each possesses its unique history, traditions, ways of life, family dynamics, and housing styles. You venture into the village to a family home where representatives from each of these ethnic groups going to show and explain to you their still kept unique differences and characteristics in day-to-day life. Your voyage brings you in the morning to the charming town of Pakbeng. Along the riverside opposite of the town and nestled in the jungle lies Laos’ most sustainable elephant sanctuary. Here, in an almost pristine natural setting, you have the privilege of encountering these majestic creatures. Born in Laos and once employed as logging elephants, they now find sanctuary in a peaceful and natural environment, their ability to survive in the wild having been curtailed in captivity. The sanctuary, a symbol of ecotourism and sustainability, reflects a deep commitment to these principles. Witnessing these gentle giants in the rainforest, and learning about their unique stories, makes for an unforgettable experience.

In the afternoon, your journey continues, gliding along the Mekong's gentle currents to your final overnight mooring spot. Subsequently, a farewell dinner is served on the sun deck, marking the conclusion of this remarkable journey.

Day 10: Huay Xai | Disembark | Return Home

  • 1 Breakfast
After an excitement-packed 9-night cruise, you take it a bit slower today, allowing you to digest all the memories collected. You have quite some river mileage to sail throughout the day until you reach Huay Xai - your final destination.

You can sleep a bit longer in the morning (if you like). The day unfolds with gentle cruising along the magnificent Mekong River, an ideal time to unwind and reflect on the journey so far.

In the mid-morning, you would like to invite you to an enthralling presentation that unravels the intricate history of the Golden Triangle, composed of its complexities of colonialism, opium, conflicts, and the multifaceted roles played by Burma, Thailand, Laos, Britain, China, and more. You are approximately at the confluence of the Mekong with the Nam Tha River, one of the Mekong’s major tributaries, known as the “Green River.” Originating near the Chinese border, 325 km to the northeast, it joins the Mekong at this juncture.

You are passing the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Tha River, a major tributary known as the "Green River". Your captain expertly navigates through rocks, rapids, and sandbanks, offering a fascinating observation from the terrace deck.

Here, the river widens, yet your skilled captain remains vigilant, navigating safely amidst rocks, stones, rapids, and sandbanks, making the sailing experience a fascinating observation from the open deck. This is also the moment right before the appetite kicks in. Kick back and enjoy the final peaceful hours of your voyage. Lunch will be served until one hour prior to arrival (approx.). .

Upon arrival at Huay Xai pier in the afternoon, you provide assistance with your luggage and a seamless transfer to the Lao - Thai border (see details in your embarkation guide). You bid your farewell right in front of the Lao immigration office and wish you a pleasant onward journey.

IMPORTANT: Kindly note that subject to low water level, the ship might not be able to sail all the way to Huay Xai and disembarkation will be at PAK THA instead. If so, Heritage Line will instead organize a land transfer to Huay Xai (about 2,5hrs). All itineraries remain unaffected.

(If you wish to extend your stay in the Golden Triangle on the Thai side, please contact your Trip Planner for assistance in arranging your transfers to Chiang Rai city, the airport, or a resort/hotel in Chiang Sean.)
