Each ship, hand-crafted in brass and teak, is an object of beauty in itself. A Pandaw adventure is very different from that offered on an ocean-going cruise. The ships are small-scale, and the atmosphere is informal and very friendly. While small, the vessels have the highest passenger-to-deck-space ratio of any cruise ship afloat. There are plenty of quiet spots to be discovered where you can read a book, write in your travel journal, or simply meditate on the spectacular passing landscape or chat with like-minded travelers and friends old and new. Pandaw designs its ships with 360-degree promenade decks that allow their passengers the freedom to interact as much, or as little, as they like. It all adds to the famous 'Pandaw spirit' that brings so many guests back on board time and time again.

Pandaw Ships

Story, Mission and Vision

Story

Pandaw traces its heritage to 1865, when Scottish merchants established the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company. By the 1920s, the company operated more than 650 vessels on the rivers of Burma, becoming the world's largest privately owned fleet of ships, with its largest steamers measuring 350 feet in length and carrying up to 4,000 passengers. In 1942, the entire fleet was deliberately scuttled as an act of denial during the Imperial Japanese Army's invasion of Burma, bringing an end to a remarkable era of river navigation.

A new chapter began in 1995, when Paul and Roser Strachan revived the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company and became the first since colonial times to offer river cruises on the Irrawaddy River, one thousand miles from the sea. By chartering and converting local boats, Pandaw introduced a new generation of travellers to the spirit of authentic adventure. In 1998, Paul Strachan discovered an original Clyde-built steamer named Pandaw and arranged its lease and restoration, marking the birth of Pandaw and establishing its distinctive style of river cruising.

Pandaw continued to expand across Asia in the years that followed. In 2003, the company introduced its river cruising concept to the Mekong River, sailing between Saigon in Vietnam and Angkor Wat in Cambodia while pioneering navigation across the previously impenetrable river border between the two countries. During high water, Pandaw also completed the first cross-navigation of Tonle Sap, an inland sea previously navigated only by local speedboats. In 2009, Pandaw expanded into India with cruises on the Ganges River, giving you a slower, more immersive way to experience one of the world's most culturally and spiritually significant waterways.

Growth continued in 2015 as Pandaw pioneered cruises on the Red River in Northern Vietnam and the Upper Mekong through Laos, expanding the fleet to 14 ships. In 2023, Pandaw opened another exciting chapter by launching cruises on the wild and majestic Brahmaputra River in Northeast India. By 2025, Pandaw celebrated 30 years of river cruising. Since launching its first cruise in Myanmar in 1995, Pandaw has grown into one of Asia's leading river cruise operators, offering immersive journeys and authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences that connect you with the region's cultures, communities, and extraordinary landscapes.

Mission

Pandaw inspires you to discover Asia's hidden waterways through immersive small-ship river expeditions that bring you closer to local communities, cultures, and landscapes. By respecting the rivers, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering meaningful connections, Pandaw delivers unforgettable adventures that celebrate the spirit of exploration.

Vision

Pandaw envisions a future where river travel continues to inspire deeper cultural understanding, authentic human connections, and responsible exploration across Asia's great waterways. By pioneering new routes, preserving the heritage of river cruising, and delivering intimate expedition experiences, Pandaw continues to help you discover extraordinary destinations while respecting the rivers and communities that make every journey unique.

Responsible Travel

For more than 30 years, Pandaw has taken guests along the rivers of Southeast Asia and India, visiting places few others reach. Throughout that time, Pandaw has recognized the importance of travelling in a way that supports both the rivers and the communities that live along them. When you travel with Pandaw, you become part of a commitment to protecting these waterways while preserving them for future generations.

Pandaw follows four key principles that shape how its ships are built, how voyages operate on the river, and how the company works with local communities. These principles help share Asia's remarkable rivers with you while caring for the people and environments that make every journey possible.

Pandaw's Four Pillars of Sustainable Travel

  • Integrity & Long-Term Stewardship - Travel with a family-owned company that has grown independently for more than 30 years. Pandaw has never taken on external investors or local equity partners, and every vessel is funded through operating cash flow, supporting long-term, transparent, and ethical decision-making.
  • Protecting Rivers & Ecosystems - Explore aboard shallow-draft vessels designed to navigate existing waterways while minimizing disruption to riverbeds and surrounding ecosystems. Onboard systems, including water purification, LED lighting, and responsible waste handling, help reduce resource consumption throughout your journey.
  • Low-Impact River Operations - Support environmentally responsible cruising through the elimination of single-use plastics, increased digitisation, and regional food sourcing practices that reduce unnecessary transportation and lower environmental impact.
  • Sustaining Local Communities - Help strengthen local communities through responsible tourism. Pandaw recruits crew locally, creating lasting community connections and supporting regional employment. Beyond every voyage, Pandaw Clinics improve healthcare and education in remote areas through a share of company profits and guest contributions.
