Story, Mission and Vision

Founded by longtime friends Jim Kimball, Renée Kimball, and Jay Viola, Tranquilo Bay is the result of years of careful research, vision, and love for Panama. The lodge was built from the ground up with sustainability, family values, and hospitality at its core. Today, the Kimballs and Jay’s family live on-site, welcoming guests as part of their extended community.

Tranquilo Bay’s mission is to offer personalized eco-adventures while preserving the rich biodiversity of the region. The team provides one-on-one attention to every guest, with curated experiences that reflect each traveler’s interests. With just nine cabins and a high staff-to-guest ratio, the lodge maintains an intimate atmosphere where everyone feels seen and cared for.

The vision is clear: create unforgettable journeys that foster connection—to each other, to nature, and to the rhythms of a slower, more intentional way of life. Through education, hospitality, and responsible tourism, Tranquilo Bay continues to grow as a model for how sustainable travel can support conservation and community.

Responsible Travel

Tranquilo Bay is proud to host and support effort to deepen the impact on Panama's biodiversity by hosting groups in 2024 and 2025. These groups submit wildlife observations and count every bird, working with eBird, iNaturalist, and Merlin, to build the catalog of biodiversity around Isla Bastimentos, in Zapatilla Cayes near Popa Island, and in San San Pond Sak National Park and Palo Seco Protection Forest.  Tranquilo Bay hosts Panamanian residents and university students from the United States who, through the power of citizen science, are helping to lead the way in demonstrating how simple observation can have a lasting impact for the species and the places we love.

Tranquilo Bay isn’t just committed to sustainability—it’s dedicated to regeneration. Every aspect of the lodge is designed with minimal environmental impact and long-term ecological stewardship in mind. From using rainwater catchment and renewable energy sources to building with low-maintenance, non-invasive materials, the lodge operates with deep respect for the land.

Over 80 of the lodge’s 200+ acres are preserved in a private conservation reserve. Tranquilo Bay has helped establish a 500-acre indigenous reserve that borders Bastimentos National Marine Park, protecting both forest and cultural resources. All water is filtered and sterilized onsite, and single-use plastics are avoided through reusable packaging and refillable water bottles.

The lodge employs 100% Panamanian staff, with most team members coming from Bocas del Toro province and underrepresented groups. Tranquilo Bay partners with local organizations to support environmental education, scientific research, and social initiatives across the region. Their impact report details efforts in conservation, local economy support, carbon reduction, and more.

At Tranquilo Bay, travelers can enjoy guilt-free luxury, knowing their stay contributes to a healthier planet and a stronger local community—making it one of the most responsible eco-lodges in Panama.
