AMAMagna Dining

One of the great joys of a European river cruise is, without question, the food. (Let’s be honest—“cultural immersion” tastes a lot better when it comes with wine.) You get to explore each destination not just on foot, but by fork—and AMAWaterways has always been very good at making sure you’re never far from your next excellent bite.
But then there’s the AMAMagna, which takes that already-solid reputation and says, “What if we just…did more?” Enter: four distinct restaurants, each with rotating themes throughout the voyage. In other words, decision paralysis has never been so delicious.

The main restaurant, Journeys, is your reliable overachiever. It delivers exactly what you want, every time: beautifully prepared dishes with a mix of local flavors and international favorites.  Drinks? Flowing freely at lunch and dinner, as they should be. Breakfast and lunch let you choose between buffet or plated options (depending on how decisive you’re feeling), while dinner is a leisurely, multi-course affair that gently encourages you to say, “Yes, I will have dessert.”

Then there’s The Chef’s Table, a longtime AMA favorite and the closest thing onboard to a culinary event. It’s an intimate, 10-course tasting experience where you’re welcomed with sparkling wine and then treated to perfectly paired wines throughout the evening.

But here’s where the AMAMagna adds a twist: by day, The Chef’s Table transforms into a Trattoria. Suddenly, you’re in a cozy Italian hideaway, complete with handmade pastas, perfectly crisp pizzas, fresh breads, and a caprese salad that somehow tastes like sunshine. And yes, there’s gelato. Of course there’s gelato. The best part? It often feels like a hidden gem, with only a couple of tables occupied—so if you’ve ever wanted that “Lady and the Tramp” pasta moment without an audience, this is your chance.

Upstairs, the Al Fresco restaurant is all about flexibility and views. It offers light breakfast and lunch over an extended timeframe—perfect for early birds, night owls, and anyone who doesn’t believe in rigid schedules while on vacation. Came back late from a concert and suddenly hungry? This is your spot for late-night snacks. By dinner, it shifts into a Mediterranean dining experience with just a handful of tables, making it feel exclusive without trying too hard. Despite the name, it’s not technically outdoors—but with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the Danube, you won’t feel like you’re missing a thing.

And then there’s Jimmy’s Wine Bar—arguably the coziest, most charming surprise on the ship. Tucked below deck, it’s styled like a classic wine cellar, with bottles lining the walls and an atmosphere that practically whispers, “Stay a while.” The dining here is family-style, featuring regional specialties that make you feel like you’ve been invited to a very well-connected local’s dinner party. Think Bavarian favorites like spaetzle, Wiener schnitzel with cranberries, beet carpaccio, and generous charcuterie spreads.

What really stands out, though, is how thoughtfully everything is handled. Dietary preferences? Not a problem. On our sailing, a vegan guest at the table received her own beautifully curated charcuterie, vegan spaetzle, and potato pancakes that had everyone else reconsidering their life choices. Her apple strudel dessert was such a hit it sparked immediate envy—quickly alleviated by a few extra portions delivered to the table.

Reservations are required (and complimentary) for dinner at The Chef’s Table, Al Fresco, and Jimmy’s, and the staff does an excellent job of making sure you don’t miss out. Which is important, because with this much variety, you’ll quickly realize something: there is simply no way to try everything.
Short of extending your trip indefinitely—which, frankly, is tempting—you’ll just have to make peace with the fact that every meal is a fantastic choice.
And really, there are worse problems to have.

Real experience. Honest advice.
