Greece and Turkey - Our Three Generation Adventure

Getting up at 3:50am for anything requires serious motivation. In Cappadocia, the motivation is a sky full of hot air balloons, and I can confirm: completely worth it.
The pre-dawn pickup is an experience all its own. What surprised me is that these tiny villages, which feel almost sleepy in the heat of the afternoon, are buzzing at 4am. Dozens of minibuses are criss-crossing the dark streets, going guesthouse to guesthouse collecting guests, all converging on the same launch field where a fleet of balloons are already half-inflated and glowing. It looks like something out of a dream — or a very well-organized circus.

And then there are the influencers. Let me tell you about the influencers. Pulled up in front of the balloons are a row of immaculate 1950s cars, and beside them are women in full-length formal gowns, accompanied by photographers charging $1,000 for the shoot. At 4am. In a field. I will say the photos are going to be spectacular, and I deeply respect the commitment.
Our balloon held 28 passengers, divided into separate sections by family group— which meant my mom, my 16-year-old daughter Samantha, and I had our own little corner of the basket, which turned out to be perfect. Our pilot opened with strict authority — phones down, everyone pay attention, here's how you land so you don't hurt yourself. But once we were airborne, he completely transformed: funny, sarcastic, clearly delighted to be doing his job. The best kind of guide.

The flight itself was everything the pictures promise but somehow more dimensional in person. What I didn't fully expect was how much the altitude changes would define the experience. We drifted low enough to nearly skim the tops of a herd of horses — our pilot clearly had a longstanding game going with them, nudging the balloon close and watching them react, laughing to himself. Then we'd rise up high enough to take in the full sweep of the valley, dozens of other balloons scattered across the morning sky like something from a children's book.
My favorite moments were in between: coasting low into the rock formations, threading through the fairy chimneys, and then cresting over the top to see the whole landscape suddenly open up ahead. That reveal — the rise from intimate to vast — never got old.

Samantha, in her red dress, spent the flight hunting for the perfect shot — and found it repeatedly. 

Cappadocia from the air is one of those sights that confirms you made the right choice in coming somewhere. The landscape looks sculpted — and it was, by millennia of volcanic eruption and erosion that left behind these extraordinary formations. Seeing Uçhisar Castle and Göreme from above gave us the perspective of what we'd explored on foot. 
Practical note: balloon operators require advance booking — often weeks out in high season. Pre-dawn pickup is standard. Dress in layers is recommended for the potential for cooler weather at altitude. And if you're traveling with teens, a red dress is essential equipment.
