Wonderful Wildlife

Koala in tree

If you're a nature lover and wildlife enthusiast, Kangaroo Island is the perfect destination to immerse yourself in the wonders of the animal kingdom! With its diverse ecosystems and protected habitats, this island is home to an array of unique and fascinating wildlife species.
Kangaroo Island is renowned for its population of kangaroos, which gave the island its name. Encounter these iconic Australian marsupials in their natural habitat as they graze on the grasslands or hop gracefully across the landscape. It's a truly remarkable sight to witness these animals up close! I even got to feed and pet some baby Joeys! There are about 65,000 kangaroos on Kangaroo Island.
Another beloved resident of Kangaroo Island is the koala. Wander through eucalyptus forests and keep an eye out for these cuddly creatures snoozing high up in the trees!
Kangaroo Island is not just about the big and famous animals; it's also home to a range of smaller but equally intriguing species. Spot echidnas, known as spiny anteaters, foraging for food, or keep an eye out for the elusive Rosenberg's Goanna. With its abundance of wildlife, Kangaroo Island offers endless opportunities for nature enthusiasts to discover and learn about Australia's unique fauna.
The recent wildfires in 2020 that engulfed Kangaroo Island were fierce and relentless, causing significant damage to the island's unique ecosystems and wildlife habitats. An estimated 210,000 hectares of land were affected, including large sections of Flinders Chase National Park, which is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife.
The fires had a profound impact on the island's wildlife population, with many species facing significant challenges. This is still evident in the burned trees that you can see as you drive across the island.  However, the resilience of Kangaroo Island's wildlife was evident as they began to rebuild their populations and reclaim their territories.
