Round the Island of Fire and Ice - Iceland Day 1

Apr 04, 2026
Day 0-1 On the way to Iceland and the Blue Lagoon.

Day 0
- Left home in Western North Carolina at 12:30 headed for Raleigh Durham Airport.  Arrive at 1800 and proceeded to the gate.  Took off at 2030 on Icelandair.  We had opted to upgrade to business class since it was an over night flight.  The seats didn't fully recline but were comfortable.  Started off with gin and tonics.  We don't usual have these but the gins were interesting.  Had dinner of lamb 2 ways with vegetables.  Tried to sleep with out much success.
Day 1
Arrived in Reykjavik at 630 and checked in with the Fly Bus for our transfer to the Blue Lagoon and our hotel.  While waiting for the bus to leave at 845, had some tea and picked up our first Iceland geocache.  At 845 left the airport still in the dark and arrived at the Blue Lagoon.  Checked our bags and proceed to the Lagoon.  Checked in got our bracelet to get our locker as well as our mud mask and drink.  It was very crowded but plenty of room to move around the lagoon.  Water was warm and relaxing.  Outside temperature was about 45 degrees F but you didn't notice it when you got in the water.  Spent about 1 1/2 hours in the water then changed and had to wait for the bus to take us to the hotel at 1315.  With a 2 hour wait had lunch in the cafe.  Also did more geocaching at the lagoon.  While lunching we felt a minor earthquake which caused some rattling of the building.

1315 Boarded the bus for town.  Bus had WiFI and outlets for our phones.  Took about 1 hour to get to town where we were lucky and the driver dropped us off across the street from our hotel.  Otherwise we would have gone to the bus depot and take a shuttle to the hotel.  Checked in to the Reykjavik Lights hotel.  Nice sized room with TV, tea kettle, and good storage area.  Very good staff who were very helpful. Comfortable beds and nice view of the town.  Would recommend this hotel.I went out to search from some geocaches which were close to the hotel while my wife stayed in to unpack and rest.

1800 went to dinner next door at Kruska having the fish of the day and chicken stew.  Weather today was overcast but not cold.
Back at 1900 to update our geocaches and journal.  Bed by 2200
