Dressing for an Icelandic Summer

Iceland, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and unpredictable weather, offers a unique summer experience that requires some thoughtful packing. When it comes to what to wear in an Icelandic summer, the key is versatility and layering. Here's a quick guide to help you prepare for your Icelandic adventure. You'll see Toby and I wearing a lot of layers as it was typically windy and wet.

1. Waterproof Outerwear:
First and foremost, invest in a good waterproof and windproof jacket. Iceland's weather can be changeable, and a sturdy outer layer will keep you dry in case of sudden rain showers or misty conditions. Opt for a breathable, waterproof jacket that you can comfortably wear over your layers.
2. Layering Basics:
Layering is essential in Iceland, even during the summer months. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. A long-sleeved shirt or lightweight sweater is a great middle layer to provide warmth, and a zip-up fleece or down jacket can be easily added or removed as temperatures fluctuate.
3. Pants:
Pack comfortable, quick-drying pants for outdoor activities. Jeans are generally not recommended for Iceland, as they can become heavy when wet and take a long time to dry. Instead, consider hiking pants or lightweight, moisture-wicking trousers.
4. Footwear:
Sturdy and waterproof hiking boots are a must for exploring Iceland's rugged terrain. They provide ankle support and keep your feet dry during hikes or walks. Don't forget to bring comfortable, moisture-wicking socks, preferably wool, to keep your feet warm and dry.
5. Headgear:
A good-quality sun hat for protection against the strong summer sun is essential. Additionally, a warm beanie or hat is useful for cooler evenings and windy conditions. Sunglasses with UV protection are a must for sunny days.
6. Gloves:
Even in summer, it can get chilly in Iceland, especially in the evenings. Lightweight, waterproof gloves will keep your hands warm and dry when needed.
7. Swimwear:
Iceland boasts numerous hot springs and geothermal pools. Don't miss the opportunity to take a relaxing dip, so be sure to pack your swimwear.
8. Miscellaneous Accessories:

Consider packing a lightweight, packable rain poncho or cover for your backpack. This will protect your belongings from unexpected rain showers. A reusable water bottle is also handy for staying hydrated during your outdoor adventures.
Remember to Pack Lightly:
Keep in mind that Iceland's summer weather can change rapidly, so flexibility is key. Instead of packing bulky items, focus on versatile layers that can be combined or removed as needed. This way, you'll be prepared for any weather conditions and able to fully enjoy the beauty of an Icelandic summer.
