Discover the wilderness and majesty of the Pacific Northwest over a wide ranging exploration of Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, and more aboard National Geographic Venture. You'll explore isolated bays and islets by kayak, hike meadows and lush green forest trails, and gain an unmatched vantage point of this stunning region on a week-long expedition.
Highlights
Explore the Salish Sea with more time in the San Juan Islands for kayaking, hiking, orca-spotting and more
Enjoy invigorating hikes and breathtaking views in Olympic National Park, a World Heritage Site.
Visit the pene-exclave of Point Roberts, WA, a unique area which has been cut off from the rest of the world as a result of politics and the pandemic
Experience unique perspective on the sea life thriving in these cool, rocky waters through the camera lens of our Undersea Specialist
Involves minimal physical effort and is typically associated with leisurely activities. Activities are low-intensity or last less than a few hours each day.
Tucked away at the southern end of Puget Sound is 18-square-mile Harstine Island. Kayak or standup paddleboard in one of the quiet bays, or go ashore and look for sand dollars as you stroll the tideline. Join a naturalist for a hike in the ravine, rife with moss covered cedar and fir trees, or choose to go on a foraging adventure and learn about the fascinating world of fungi in this area. If the tides are right, walk across the exposed sandbar to neighboring McMicken Island.
Transit the exciting and narrow waterway of Deception Pass where ebb and flood tides create whirlpools and thrill seeking kayakers can often be seen surfing the standing waves. Come ashore in the pene-exclave of Point Roberts, Washington, where the 1846 Treaty of Oregon between Britain and the United States declared the 49th Parallel the border between the territories and effectively created a geographic oddity. You can’t travel to Point Roberts by land without passing through Canada, and if you have a child in 4th grade or above, you had better pack their passport with their lunch, for they have to pass through two border crossings to attend school on the US mainland.
Spend two days visiting the remote shores of the San Juan Islands, an archipelago in northern Washington State perfect for kayaking, exploring by Zodiac, hiking, and spotting resident orca pods. Walks with our expert staff will familiarize you with the natural and cultural history of the rugged northwest coast region. Gain a unique perspective of the sea life thriving in these cool, rocky waters through the camera lens of our Undersea Specialist.
Today we invite you to explore Olympic National Park. Choose to take in the sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains, subalpine meadows, and the Straits of Juan de Fuca from a viewpoint at Hurricane Ridge or enjoy an easy two-mile hike through the moss laden old-growth forest to Marymere Falls, a stunning 90-foot waterfall at Lake Crescent.
Day 7: Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge & Port Townsend
This morning, wake up just off of Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge, an island teeming with bird life. Along with bald eagles and glaucouswinged gulls it is home to one of the last two breeding sites of tufted puffins and the third largest colony of rhinoceros auklet in the Salish Sea. Later this afternoon we will dock in Port Townsend and visit the Victorian-era Fort Worden State Park. Once home to 1,000 troops and officers, the fort and her neighboring sisters of Fort Flagler and Fort Casey made up the coastal defense system known as “The Triangle of Fire” protecting Puget Sound from enemy invaders. This evening, enjoy a tasting of ciders and local eats at a nearby cidery.

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!

The response from Adventure Life to my first inquiry was prompt and promising. I worked with Jamie Broeckel, Trip Planner, via text, email, and phone calls- always extremely responsive and thorough with information and explaining the process to arrange a private tour for me to Malaysia Borneo. Within about week, the booking was complete and I made decisions because of Jamie's great customer service , friendly manner, and overall competence on behalf of the company's travel expertise. Now I have an itinerary, additional Trip Planner Assistants, several links for vital information for traveling to Maylasia, etc. Still many details for Sept. trip, but now the heavy lifting is done and I can enjoy the rest of the anticipation and research!! Thanks Jamie- you are amazing!!!!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
