Day 3: Indian Ocean Scenic Navigation

Embark on an unforgettable journey across the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. As you glide along its sapphire waters, inhale the fresh, salt-kissed air of this ancient maritime crossroads. In between enlightening conversations with your Expedition Team and fellow explorers, step out on deck to watch the water for the electric flash of flying fish or the spouts of majestic whales breaching the surface. Please note: Navigation times may change at the Captain’s discretion.

Day 4: Antsiranana, Madagascar

Awaken your sense of wonder in Antsiranana, formerly known as Diego-Suarez, a breathtaking Malagasy sanctuary where coastal charm meets dramatic geological marvels. Gaze upon the iconic Nosy Lonjo, known as Madagascar’s Sugar Loaf Mountain, rising majestically from the sapphire bay. Venture inland to uncover the otherworldly Tsingy Rouge, where striking crimson limestone formations create a labyrinthine landscape of natural artistry. Wander the lush trails of Amber Mountain National Park, home to rare lemurs, hidden waterfalls and a refreshingly cool microclimate amid ancient rainforest. For a remarkably serene escape, glide across the crystalline waters of the Emerald Sea, a secluded paradise perfectly suited for mindful relaxation and pristine snorkeling.

Day 5: Nosy Be, Madagascar

Breathe in the intoxicating fragrance of ylang-ylang as you arrive at Nosy Be, Madagascar’s enchanting “Perfumed Island.” Journey into the emerald depths of Lokobe Reserve, where expert guides help you spot playful black lemurs and color-shifting chameleons hidden within the ancient forest. Afterward, wander through the historic streets of Hell-Ville to admire faded colonial architecture and browse bustling local markets filled with authentic Malagasy spices and crafts. Sip local rum at a waterfront resort before unwinding on the powdery sands of Andilana Beach, or dive into the crystalline waters of Nosy Tanikely marine reserve for a spectacular snorkeling expedition.

Day 6: Mamoudzou, Mayotte

Discover the intoxicating fusion of French sophistication and vibrant Comorian heritage in Mamoudzou, the capital of Mayotte. At the bustling Marché de Mamoudzou, fragrant local spices and colorful textiles immerse you in the local culture. Beyond the lively streets lies one of the largest and most pristine enclosed lagoons in the world. Venture into these turquoise waters for an amazing snorkeling expedition, where you can encounter majestic sea turtles, playful dolphins and an array of colorful marine life. A hike into the headlands or to the summit of Mount Choungui reveals a whole new perspective on the island’s unspoiled natural beauty.

Day 8: Kilwa Kisiwani, Tanzania

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Kilwa Kisiwani is a hidden gem that was a thriving center of the Swahili trading empire from the 9th to the 16th centuries. This Tanzanian island was a key hub in the Indian Ocean trade network connecting Africa with Arabia, India and beyond. Explore the 14th-century coral-stone ruins, a testament to the island’s prosperity and architectural ingenuity. Visit the Great Mosque, the oldest surviving mosque on the East African coast, renowned for its impressive domed prayer hall and intricate vaulted ceilings. Nearby, the Husuni Kubwa palace complex, once a grand residence of the sultan, showcases the opulence of Kilwa’s rulers with its vast courtyards, storerooms and ocean-facing terraces. This journey through Kilwa’s historic landmarks offers a profound connection to Africa’s rich maritime and cultural heritage.

Day 9: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Your exploration of Dar es Salaam might begin by tracing Tanzania’s rich heritage at the National Museum and House of Culture, the oldest and largest museum complex in the country. Then embrace the city’s lively energy at the bustling Kivukoni Fish Market, where the daily catch arrives straight from the Indian Ocean, and be sure to visit the Mwenge Woodcarvers Market to watch local artisans at work and secure authentic Makonde carvings as a souvenir. Marvel at the striking architectural contrast of the Azania Front Lutheran Church and St. Joseph’s Cathedral, standing as testaments to the region’s diverse past. Adventure seekers should explore nearby Saadani National Park, the only wildlife park in East Africa where the savanna meets the sea, creating opportunities to observe not only lions, elephants and zebras but also hippos in the Wami River and green sea turtles on the seashores.

Day 10: Zanzibar, Tanzania

In the winding alleys of Zanzibar’s UNESCO-listed Stone Town, intricately carved wooden doors, ornate balconies and richly decorated interiors bring together a complex fusion of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European elements. Get an intimate look at royal life in the former sultans’ residences at the Palace Museum and in the House of Wonders, the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity and an elevator. The living museum extends to the massive ramparts of the Old Fort and the Forodhani Gardens overlooking the harbor, where you can try fresh seafood and Zanzibar pizza at the street food stalls in the evening. Zanzibar also offers the chance to unwind at exclusive beach resorts set on sugary sands, or venture into the sapphire waters for snorkeling and diving amid thriving marine parks and coral reefs. Beyond the city limits, a spice plantation tour awakens your senses with the earthy aromas of fresh cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Day 11: Mombasa, Kenya | Disembark

  • 1 Breakfast
Immerse yourself in the rhythms of Mombasa, where centuries of Swahili heritage come vividly to life. In the narrow, winding alleyways of the historic Old Town, elaborately carved wooden façades and a unique blend of African, Asian and European culture whisper tales of the ancient spice trade. Just beyond, stand before the formidable walls of Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a monumental example of Portuguese military architecture that has guarded this jewel of the Indian Ocean since the 16th century. Engage deeply with the warm local culture as you browse bustling markets filled with aromatic spices and authentic artisan crafts. The coast of Mombasa is home to some of Africa’s most beautiful beaches, while the inland savannas of Tsavo East National Park offer the chance to observe Kenya’s wildlife, including elephants, rhinos, lions and cheetahs.
