The Royal Clipper sailing past Piton View in St Lucia, the Caribbean.
Sailing the Caribbean aboard the Royal Clipper is unlike any other cruise—it’s a return to the age of legendary explorers, where every moment feels like a page out of an adventure novel. Known as the world’s largest and only five-masted, full-rigged sailing ship, the Royal Clipper brings the mystique of traditional sailing to life, with modern luxuries seamlessly woven into its design. When those 54,000 square feet of sails are hoisted, you’re instantly transported to another era, gliding through crystal waters with the wind as your guide.
It’s a breathtaking blend of excitement, awe, and a touch of nostalgia!
The Royal Clipper at sunset anchored in St Lucia, the Caribbean. (Claudia Corona)I had the incredible opportunity to travel aboard the Royal Clipper, a journey that took me through the breathtaking Grenadine Islands in December. Every day felt like an exciting escape!
Our cabins, with their polished wood and brass accents, combined nautical charm with modern comfort. Mornings began with the soothing sound of waves and glimpses of new island paradises through our porthole windows. Stepping onto the deck, we were greeted by endless blue horizons, best enjoyed from the unique crow’s nest platform—a thrilling spot for panoramic views of the Caribbean.
The ship’s three saltwater pools were an unexpected luxury, offering the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Lounging under billowing sails was unforgettable, and the deck became the heart of the ship—especially at sunset, when golden light illuminated the sails, and we gathered with fellow travelers to toast another day of exploring places like St. Lucia, Grenada, and the Tobago Cays.
Dining onboard was another standout experience, with every meal thoughtfully prepared, from hearty breakfasts to elegant multi-course dinners in the stylish dining room. Evenings often ended at the Tropical Bar, where we sipped cocktails under the stars, enjoying live music and swapping stories with newfound friends as the ship gently rocked in the waves.
The sports team was fantastic, and water toys were easily accessible from the marina platform. During beach stops, kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing were available for those looking to explore the waters. For a bit of excitement, mast climbing offered stunning views from the top of the ship. And for relaxation, daily yoga classes provided a peaceful way to unwind before heading out to discover another island.
For quieter moments, the Royal Clipper offered a spa, a gym with ocean views, and a cozy Piano Lounge perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. The open bridge policy also gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the skilled crew in action, navigating the ship with precision. I loved that the vessel sailed with wind power as much as possible, staying true to its maritime heritage and adding a meaningful connection to the journey.
Sailing the Caribbean aboard the Royal Clipper was more than a vacation—it was an unforgettable mix of adventure, discovery, and relaxation in one of the world’s most beautiful regions. Every moment onboard felt special, making it a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
