This afternoon, your journey will commence through Chile's exemplary fjord region in Ushuaia (Argentina). The smell of adventure is in the air as you will be welcomed by a chilled cocktail and dinner before heading to the stunning landscapes of Patagonia, craggy coast of Chile.
Day 2: Garibaldi Fjord and Alberto de Agostino National Park, Chile
The ship has already sailed westbound forth the Beagle Channel that separates Argentina from bordering Chile as you take the night off. This morning, you will arrive at the Garibaldi fjord where two glaciers ascend towards a ravishing mountain backdrop. You will take to the Zodiacs and explore them from a distance. By afternoon, you will reach the infamous Alberto de Agostino National Park.
Day 3: Alberto de Agostino National Park and Marinelli Glacier, Chile
Alberto de Agostino National Park is famous for having a great number of glaciers hanging off by slopes towards its mountains of different fjords, bays, and channels and one of these glaciers is called Marinelli Glacier. This huge crevasse-covered glacier flows from Darwin Mountain range into Ainsworth Bay. Even from a distance, you will hear the groaning and creaking of the glacier and the large iceberg that has split and shed from its face brood silently in the dark waters.
Start the morning aboard the Zodiac boat to explore the promontory of Punta Santa Ana where the historic and significant Chilean fort is located, the Fort Bulnes. Explore the small churches, barracks, powder magazine and log cabins during your visit.
This visit is one of the highlights of the trip as you will have an excursion to Torres del Paine National Park. This exemplary location brags some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the world with the celebrated towers emerging above the surrounding plateau and glacier-fed lake systems. A huge force of waterfalls rushes through the narrow channels between lakes. There will be an opportunity for small hikes where you can see the jaw-dropping scenery of the gigantic massif.
You may want to be on the outer decks as the Captain exquisitely steers you as you pass through the 80 meters wide channel of White Narrows. Bernal Glacier is one of the highlights of this trip whereas you can learn glaciology featuring some unconsolidated glacial debris pushed forward by actions of the moving ice.
Day 8: Brueggen Glacier and Messier Channel, Chile
As the ship continues to cruise into the Eyre Fjord, you will get to see the tremendous Brüggen Glacier. Get a personal look at the largest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica as ‘Pio XI’ stands at 60 kilometers in length. By afternoon, you will reach Messier Channel that disconnects South America from Wellington Island.
After spending several days in the glacial system, fjords, and forests, you get to visit the coastal village of Caleta Tartel. As it is located on a steep hill, this village does not have any roads but is instead linked by wooden walkways that connect the houses to town services. Their mode of transportation is limited to jetties because of the current situation of their location.
Today, you will continue the cruise going to the Pacific Ocean leaving the fjords in the north. This is where you might encounter migrating whales that use the Humboldt current as an oceanic conveyor belt.
This morning, you are in a close by to the town of Castro, the provincial capital of Chiloé. This town was founded in 1567 and the third oldest city in Chile. You will make your way ashore and immediately be captivated by the colorful houses built on stilts around the harbor. These houses are known as 'palatifos' and are simple houses built by fishermen. The local markets are a highlight and showcase some of the most impressive crafts and textiles in the country. Return to the ship in the afternoon you will hug the coastline, hoping to see the snow-capped summits of the numerous volcanoes that characterize this region.
Mocha Island is an important historic site that you will get to visit today. This is located 35 kilometers off the coast of mainland Chile. This was also inhabited for centuries by the Mapuche tribe before Europeans first discovered it in the mid-15th century. This island was frequented by pirates and Sir Francis Drakes. Legend has it that more than 100 shipwrecks lie in the surrounding waters. If the weather is in good condition, you will head ashore where there would be hiking options. Possible resident sea lions could be seen and if you are lucky, you can encounter whales. The rare Pink-footed shearwater can be also found on the island, nesting in burrows on the forested slopes.
As you make your way towards the historic port of Valparaiso, the educational presentations continue. Enjoy an entertaining voyage recap by the Expedition leader and join the photography expert in the multimedia room where you can download your favorite captured images. You can also spend some time outside the observation decks and in the spacious lounges or on the bridge.
