Nicaragua rewards almost any travel style, so the best trip comes down to four questions: how much time you have, how active you want to be, what pulls you most, and how much comfort you want along the way. Here's how to think it through:
Start with your pace. If you want to see the country's greatest hits without rushing, a classic 7 or 8-day itinerary through Granada, a volcano or two, and a beach finish covers the essentials. If you'd rather go deeper, we recommend adding either León or Ometepe, or perhaps more wildlife or a coast to coast trip for 10 to 11 days. If you're short on time, then a few days in Granada and a beach extension will still deliver the highlights.
Then match your energy. Nicaragua runs the full range. Travelers who want to be moving are satisfied with hiking volcanoes, kayaking, volcano boarding on Cerro Negro. We can customize to suit your activity level. Those who'd rather absorb the culture at a slower rhythm, with colonial cities, artisan villages, and hands-on cooking or pottery, may prefer our more history and culture-focused itineraries. Most travelers want a mix, and that's easy to build.
Follow your main interest. If wildlife is the draw, choose a nature-focused trip that works in cloud forest, monkeys, birds, and turtle nesting season. If it's colonial history and everyday local life, lean into the León to Granada to Masaya Volcano corridor. If you mostly want to unwind, anchor the trip around San Juan del Sur or the Corn Islands.
Decide how you want to end. Many travelers cap a Nicaragua trip with beach time, whether to sunbathe or surf. Choose a Pacific eco-lodge near San Juan del Sur or a Caribbean add-on out on the Corn Islands. It's the simplest way to turn an active week into a well-rounded one.
We recommend seven to eight days for the Pacific highlights on a classic Adventure Life Nicaragua tour, or ten to eleven to add Ometepe Island, León City, or deeper wildlife or multisport time, and a few extra days if you want a Corn Islands or beach add-on.
Both exist, and sometimes this is a false dichotomy. Active travelers can fill days with volcano hikes and kayaking; others can keep it to walkable colonial cities, markets, and beach time. Most itineraries can also blend the two, and the balance is adjustable. If you do combine the two, we recommend starting out more active and then ending with the rest and relaxation at either San Juan del Sur or the Corn Islands.
Absolutely, yes. While many cite similarities, the two are still very distinct countries in so many ways. You'll find the same volcanoes and Pacific coast, but with colonial cities, Lake Nicaragua, fewer crowds, and better value. The two pair together excellently if a multi-country trip is possible.
