Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, offers more than just a gateway to Antarctica. Surrounded by the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel, this Patagonian treasure invites visitors to experience a blend of outdoor adventures, wildlife encounters, and rich cultural history.

Tierra del Fuego National Park

Argentina’s first coastal national park is a must-see. Spanning forests, mountains, rivers, and bays along the Beagle Channel, the park showcases Tierra del Fuego's raw natural beauty. Begin with a scenic drive west of Ushuaia into the heart of the park. Stop at Ensenada Bay, Roca Lake, Laguna Verde, and Laguna Negra for short walks, panoramic views, and wildlife sightings, including beavers and steamer ducks. The experience culminates at Lapataia Bay, where National Route No. 3 ends at the edge of the continent.

For history enthusiasts, the End of the World Train is an optional add-on. This narrow-gauge railway, once used by prisoners to transport timber, offers a brief ride through the park. Enjoy a stop at Cascada La Macarena and views of a reconstructed Yamana campsite.

For more active travelers, the Trek and Paddle tour is a perfect choice. Hike through lenga and coihue forests for 3.5 hours, then paddle across tranquil bays in inflatable canoes. The tour concludes at Lapataia Bay, where you can spot seabirds like petrels and albatrosses.

Beagle Channel Navigation & Harberton Estancia with Martillo Island

Start your day with a boat ride along the Beagle Channel, passing Sea Lions Island and Bird Island, where sea lions lounge and cormorants soar. Continue to the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, a key landmark near the Monte Cervantes shipwreck site. After lunch, head to Estancia Harberton, one of the oldest ranches in the region, and visit the Acatushún Museum, renowned for its marine mammal and bird collections. Then, board a semi-rigid boat to Martillo Island to walk among Magellanic and Gentoo penguins, nesting from September to April.

Emerald Lagoon Hike

This half-day excursion (approx. 6 hours) is one of the most scenic hikes in the region. The trail takes you uphill through lenga forests and rugged terrain for about 2.5 hours before reaching the stunning Emerald Lagoon. You'll have time to relax by the tranquil green waters, take photos, and soak in the breathtaking landscape for roughly 1.5 hours before returning to Ushuaia.

Fagnano and Escondido Lakes

For nature lovers, a visit to Fagnano and Escondido Lakes is a fantastic way to explore the wilder side of Tierra del Fuego. These remote lakes, surrounded by rugged mountains and dense forests, offer opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and hiking.

Martial Glacier

Hike to Martial Glacier for sweeping views of Ushuaia and the surrounding mountains. You can take a cable car partway up and then enjoy a moderate hike to the glacier, particularly stunning in the winter months when snow blankets the landscape.

Museo Marítimo y del Presidio (Maritime Museum and Prison Museum)

To dive into Ushuaia’s rich history, visit the Museo Marítimo, housed in the old prison. The museum tells the story of Ushuaia’s maritime heritage and its early days as a penal colony.

Ushuaia’s Artisan Market

For a taste of local culture, explore Ushuaia’s artisan market, where you’ll find everything from handmade wool products to regional artwork and fresh foods. It’s the perfect spot to pick up unique souvenirs.

Ushuaia Cuisine

Ushuaia is also a great place to sample regional flavors. Don't miss:
  • Centolla (King Crab): Fresh, sweet, and often served grilled or in stews.
  • Cordero Patagónico (Patagonian Lamb): Slow-roasted over an open flame for a tender, flavorful dish.
  • Cazuela de Vieiras (Scallop Stew): Hearty and rich, ideal after a day of adventure.
