Since its capture from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon, Portugal's capital, is a city steeped in over 20 centuries of history. Nestled along the northern bank of the Tagus River, its vibrant downtown, the Baixa, showcases elegant 18th-century architecture centered around the bustling Rossio Square. The Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest and most charming neighborhoods, has preserved much of its original medieval layout, having miraculously withstood the devastation of the 1755 earthquake.
Portimão, the largest city in the western Algarve, has a rich heritage as a historic hub for sardine fishing and processing. Today, it is an ideal base for exploring the region's west Algarve. Among the most popular excursions are visits to Lagos and Silves. Lagos played a pivotal role in Portugal's 14th-century Age of Exploration. At the same time, Silves, the ancient capital of the Algarve, offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's storied past through its remarkable historical landmarks and attractions.
Each Star Clippers ship offers a traditional and elegant way to see the world. Feel the wind fill the sails and gently carry you from one gorgeous destination to the next. During your time on board, you can choose to relax on a sun lounger or cool off in one of the pools on the top deck, while more adventurous passengers may enjoy the opportunity to climb the rigging or even have a go at steering the ship. Alternatively, you can wander the interior areas of the ship and discover relaxing lounges, a revitalizing spa, and a peaceful library.
Funchal is a modern, cosmopolitan city known for its many top restaurants, warm year-round climate, and natural beauty. Facing the blue Atlantic with a backdrop of dramatic mountains, it is incredibly lush. The approach to Funchal Harbor is well-documented as one of the two most spectacular in the world, with Rio de Janeiro being the other. Zona Velha, an old fishers’ neighborhood in East Funchal, has recently been transformed into a hip quarter packed with bars, galleries, shops, and restaurants and is the place to head at nightfall.

Day 16: Bridgetown, Barbados | Disembark
1 Breakfast
On the wild and rugged east coast of Barbados, the isolated beaches are the color of sunrise, the red sands having blown all the way across the Atlantic from the Sahara. The easternmost island of the Windwards, and indeed, of the entire Caribbean, reaches out to Africa and the Old World, as if not quite part of the New. Bridgetown, Barbados, is an interesting town full of contrasts. George Washington actually slept here! Trafalgar Square reminds you that the laidback, rum- and fun-loving island's British-influenced heritage includes revered traditions like cricket and high tea. Disembark after breakfast and continue your independent trip back home.

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!
