With the help of Adventure Life, we planned a last-minute trip to the Falkland Islands last December. We wanted to time our travels with the breeding cycle of the migratory penguins and we definitely succeeded - we saw so many fluffy, chubby baby penguins and were lucky enough to see albatross chicks and baby seals too!

We were on board the holiday 2011 sailing of L'Austral with stops on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, Antarctica, the South Shetland Islands and Cape Horn.

Though Falklands' history has included the influences of the French, Spanish, Argentine, and British, it is British culture that prevails in the Islands today. Seventy percent of the ~3,000 inhabitants have British and Scottish roots, though a scattering of Scandinavian names is a legacy of the whalers and sealers who resided in the islands in the 19th century.

Located north of the Polar Front, the Falkland Islands are not considered sub-Antarctic, but are a common stop for many Antarctica travels.

The best time to visit the Falkland Islands is in the summer and fall between November and March when the days are longer, the wildlife is active, and more of the archipelago is accessible to travelers. The Southern Hemisphere’s summer is opposite to the Northern Hemisphere’s, so summer in the Southern Hemisphere is winter in the north.

Due to the moderating influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands actually have fairly mild weather.
