The seventh continent never ceases to amaze me. On my second journey south, I experienced a remarkable March expedition to Antarctica aboard the beautiful Ocean Explorer, traveling on the Antarctic Express: Fly South, Cruise North, an unforgettable adventure that once again revealed the magic of this extraordinary destination.
Antarctica has a way of staying with you long after you leave. Having experienced it once before, I never quite stopped thinking about the profound, almost surreal silence, the vast and humbling scale, and the feeling of being somewhere truly untouched. Now, as I prepare for my second journey to the White Continent, the excitement feels different, familiar, yet just as powerful.

Returning to Antarctica is not about repeating the same trip; it’s about seeing it through a new lens. No two expeditions are ever the same. Weather, wildlife, and landing sites all shape the experience, meaning each day unfolds with a sense of discovery. I find myself looking forward to those quiet zodiac cruises among sculptural icebergs, and the simple, unforgettable moments, like standing on a remote shoreline as penguins go about their day, completely undisturbed.

Packing for Antarctica, the second time around, feels more intentional. Whether you’re traveling on a fly-in itinerary or crossing the Drake Passage by ship, having the right gear makes all the difference. Most operators provide a recommended packing list, and while specifics may vary, the essentials remain the same: waterproof pants for landings, thermal base layers for both top and bottom, and a warm mid-layer such as fleece to retain heat. Layering is key, allowing you to adapt to changing conditions throughout the day. This expedition with Quark includes a fantastic parka for you to keep, along with boots on loan during the trip. If you plan to bring camera gear, then bring also a waterproof bag and proper protection, which are essential to keep your equipment safe during landings and Zodiac rides. Add waterproof gloves, sunglasses with UV protection, a beanie, and a buff, and you will be all set for your adventure. Beyond functionality, comfort is everything, being warm and dry allows you to enjoy every moment outdoors to the fullest.
As departure approaches, this second trip feels like a continuation, an opportunity to reconnect with a place that is both humbling and unforgettable.
