Antarctica Camping FAQs

Can you go camping in Antarctica?

Yes! Camping in Antarctica is one of the most sought after activities available to travelers visiting the world’s southernmost continent. Antarctica camping is a safe, exhilarating way to have an intimate, rare experience of sleeping on Antarctica.

Is it worth camping in Antarctica?

Absolutely! Camping in Antarctica gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sleep on permanent glaciers at the bottom of the world. You can also enjoy activities like sea kayaking, skiing, exploring the freezing waters by Zodiac, and hiking across glaciers in the footsteps of explorers like Ernest Shackleton.

When to go camping in Antarctica?

The best time for Antarctica camping is during the summer, from November to March, when wildlife is most active and daylight hours are longest. December to February is the most popular period, with temperatures regularly above freezing. Ultimately, the ideal month depends on your specific interests, as the tourist season runs roughly five months, from early November to late March.

What clothing is suitable for camping in Antarctica?

While most of the essential gear for an Antarctica camp is provided, packing specific clothing items is still recommended to ensure comfort and warmth. Travelers should focus on layering, with moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers like fleece, and a waterproof, windproof outer shell. Accessories such as a warm hat, gloves, and thick socks are crucial for Antarctica camping, as are UV-protective sunglasses.

Is it safe to camp in Antarctica?

Camping in Antarctica is very safe. You'll only camp in Antarctica on land when the weather is good, and expert guides will always be able to communicate with your ship using radios. Gear will also be provided to make sure that you are dry and warm.
